Lisbon was the last stop on our trip to northern Portugal. We stayed at the Tivoli Jardim for 4 nights (for the price of 3 - check the offers). The room was large, excellently furnished with a super terrace (the view is not brilliant and the bathroom is a little on the small side) and lots of storage space, mini bar, hairdrier and excellent aircon. It is a typical 1970's hotel and the public rooms need updating compared to the neighbouring 5 star Tivoli Lisboa which is very opulent. The Jardim Hotel breakfast is the best we have ever had in any hotel - about 5 or 6 bowls of fresh fruit, different breads, cheese, ham yoghurt, scrambled egg, bacon etc. The staff are extremely efficient, courteous and knowledgeable. The hotel is in an excellent position on the Avenue Liberdade as it is a small street back from the main avenue, which means its quieter. It is also a fairly easy walk down the Liberdade to the tourist office, the Restaurado memorial, and the restaurant area. The five star hotels at the top of the Liberdade near M. Pombal are on an extremely noisy roundabout (think Place de L'Etoile in Paris) and its a hell of a hike down the hill! The Jardim has an open car park in front of the hotel - which we very much appreciated instead of having to pay 14 euros a night for an enclosed car park - which was perfectly safe. Jardim guests can use the Lisboa pool - which is a few minutes walk out of the front of the hotel. We would have appreciated a side door from our hotel to the pool area, as it would be a bit more discreet! The outdoor pool is heated, and is surrounded by loads of sunloungers with good quality cushions, and they supply free towels (they don't allow you to take your own drink in with you to the pool area, and the pool bar is quite pricey). We would certainly use the Tivoli Group again. If you are staying in the Jardim, do make the effort to go to the terrace on the top floor of the Lisboa - the view is fabulous, and we wish we'd thought to have lunch or dinner up there. The city buses in Lisbon are OK - you need to pick the right one. A visit to Belem is essential - the Discovery Monument, the Monastery and the Maritime Museum are all worth visiting. Also, Sintra is lovely - but don't go on Sunday! the museums are free on Sundays and the place was over-run by tourists!
