we just came back from the residencial alegria. the building is lovely, the hotel is fairly central and I would definitely go back there. the wooden floorboards were one of the reasons for us choosing this hotel, and although the room we had was smallish, there was a 'balcony' which made it feel more spacious. Also, the ceiling was high and the bathroom large, and absolutely impecable for cleanliness. the breakfast was quite basic, toast, cheese and ham with coffee and juice, but I would recommend this hotel for a central but quiet location. it is also very easily accessible from the airport with the airport bus that leaves you close by, 3 mins walk from the bus stop. the lovely peaceful park infront of the hotel makes it all the more attractive. the only negative part of the stay was a rather uncomfortable mattress in room 106!

We had 2 rooms in the hotel (a twin for our teenage daughters & a double for us) next to each other (just as we requested). They were rooms 210 & 209. Both were very clean and simply furnished. They both had spare blankets & pillows (which we used).
Breakfast was rolls, toast, cheese, ham, jams plus juice, coffee & hot chocolate. Tables had pristine white cloths.
The hotel has an excellent location for public transport & sightseeing.
A taxi from the airport on Sunday evening (for which there is a surcharge) cost just under 10 euros.
I would stay here again & recommend to friends - the value for money is excellent.

“Good value for money”

We stayed for 5 nights at the end of January. We were a little worried as we found the hotel thru Alistair Sawday's special places to stay, booked & then read some poor reviews. All was fine. Aerobus straight there a warm welcome and a lovely room looking out over the park/square. We had room 208 and I can see that if you had a room near the lift or stairs it could be noisy. Ask for a room on the right side of the building as you face it from the square to avoid stairwell.
Breakfast was good lots to eat & help yourself &food constantly being replaced.
Eating out was easy we worked our way thru the good selection accross & around the square, all good food/value & service. The local Police & Fire officers also used them.
Staff were polite & helpful.
We look for small places with good access to sights & transport, this was one. We also walk a lot & certainly put in the miles in Lisbon, on return to our room there was a good shower and bed for the night.
Certainly out of season an excellent and good value place to stay.

I stayed for 1 night (single room) in this hotel about 2 weeks' ago. I loved the location, which is right off the elegant Avenida da Liberdad. It faces a nice square that holds a little arts/crafts market I guess on the weekends. The hotel is old and the room was small (given a double bed), but very clean and comfortable. It also had a t.v. where you could usually find one station in English (CNN). I faced the square (has a small balcony), and only heard the usual street noices (car driving), but had no trouble sleeping. The breakfast was good with fresh buns, bread for toasting, cheese, ham, various jams, coffee, tea, juices. For 48 euros for a single room, near the main downtown location (Rossio square, Baixa district), a metro nearby if I wanted to use it, I couldn't go wrong. I booked directly with the hotel via email. The reception was polite. I took the very useful Aerocar from the airport (3 Euros) and it stops on the Avenida da Liberdade about 1-2 blocks from the hotel. You walk on the right hand side of the street, go past the Sofitel hotel, up to the Carlson Wagonlit Travel Agency and turn right (Pl. de Alegria), and walk up. The hotel is on the left hand side of this square next to the Police station. For price and location, I would easily recommend this place. I think staying anywhere around av. da Liberdade or the Pombal area is a good choice. The metro station is right on Avenida da Liberdade, close to this hotel's street location.

We stayed there a week ago and we liked it because it was clean and central. Everybody is friendly and the breakfast was good.
The residence is very central and very quiet actually.

Our room had 001 had rather a small and hard bed, but we will definetly stay there again.
