The hotel is rated 5 stars and it didn’t disappoint. We got a superb deal through Expedia and stayed there for a week in July 2006.
It’s located in a quiet area, maybe 2-3 miles north of the Baixa – the heart of the action. But this isn’t a problem, as it’s less than 10 mins on the (very cheap, clean and efficient) metro. The nearest metro station, Parque, is only a couple of blocks away – two minutes walk from the hotel.
The rooms are lovely, and the ample buffet breakfasts are superb. The chocolates on the pillow each evening were a nice touch too. The staff are top notch – especially the dining room staff at breakfast who were the epitome of professionalism, and simply couldn’t be faulted.
One word of warning though: don’t channel-hop on the Pay-TV. Many hotels allow you 30 seconds free preview or suchlike before they ask you to type in your room number to confirm you want to buy the movie. Not the Real Palacio. As soon as you hit the pay-TV button on the handset you are billed for it. There is a disclaimer on the screen but it is in very small print at the bottom of the screen. We felt this was a real con (13 euros!).
Despite this wee glitch (and a particularly arsey and argumentative waiter who tried to make out WE were in the wrong when we complained about a meal), we would recommend this SUPERB value-for-money hotel.
