I booked a triple room through Expedia in April for our stay from 18-25th of July 2006, staying with my parents. Having read the overbooking reviews on this website, I decided to email Expedia with the evidence and asked them to doublecheck that all was ok and that I indeed would have a room upon arrival. I did this 10 days before our arrival. I received an email from Expedia confirming that, having spoken with a member of the reception, all was ok. However, I still had my suspicions about it so I decided that it would be best to make a copy of the Expedia email as well as print out a copy of all the reviews on here that mentioned the overbooking policy. How glad I am to have done this!
We arrived at the hotel at 18.30 and I immediately sussed that something was wrong. The girl at reception barely looked us in the eye and kept us waiting for a full 5 minutes. She then came to us and uttered the immortal words: "I need to talk to you about something that has happened today. We have had a problem with our computer and..." BEFORE she could finish her sentence I cut her off and said: "Wait a minute, dont tell me, you have overbooked the hotel and you cant provide us with a room and you are going to move us to another hotel!". I was angry of course, but she was shocked because she didnt expect me to know about the overbooking policy. I showed her the proof of this website (which she claimed to be unaware of, so they obviously dont read this) and argued that why should we have to be moved to another hotel when he had booked a room so far in advance and besides, it was next to the Metro so we wouldnt have to walk. She didnt say anything but another 5 minutes later she miraculously had found a room for us! So...the moral of the story is that if you are planning to stay at this hotel, make a copy of all their overbooking reviews (including this one) to show to them in case you have to argue your point.
Once we got our room (608 on sixth floor), we didnt have any further problems with the hotel itself as it was a very good 3 *. Our room had twin beds and a softer, less comfortable third bed, but I wasnt too worried about it as I managed to sleep ok on it.
The room was very clean and modern looking with a television that featured English channels as well as other foreign channels, air con, and a bar with some drinks and snacks. The bathroom was very clean with a few bits and bobs like shower gel and shampoo bottles, and it had a strong shower. We have to commend the cleaners because they have a hard job each day with little time to clean each room but they always did a great job with ours! Our view was quite cute really as there were blocks of houses right opposite and in the evenings, some Portuguese residents would sit on their balconies to have dinner.
Breakfast was a great array of fresh and canned fruit, with a variety of breads, cakes, jams, cheese and ham, bacon, sausages and scrambled egg, coffee, and a selection of teas, juices and cereal. Being a buffet you could eat as much as you liked, and it was all well presented.
I must recommend dining at the hotel restaurant. There are no restaurants in the hotel's vicinity and the area becomes quite seedy at night. The reason why I am recommending dinner at the hotel is because each day they offer a buffet for 12Euros which is cheap for an hotel. The buffet menu is everchanging and the hot mains offered are Portuguese. The buffet is nicely presented and offers a selection of salads and sauces, soup, 2 hot dinners (one of fish and one of meat with vegetables on the side) and a massive selection of gorgeous desserts including pears in wine, chocolate cake, trifle, jelly, fruit salad, creme caramel...the food is absolutely fabulous here and the 12 Euros includes either a glass of wine or water. If you want wine from the A La Carte menu, you can get a decent bottle for as little as 6 Euros. The restaurant is very quiet in the evenings (it was usually only us and one other couple dining there) but the food is excellent and worth recommending.
If however you are looking for a restaurant outside of the hotel, I can highly recommend the 'Barca Bela' on Rua Da Palma, which is a 15 minute walk from the hotel, but why bother when for approx 3.50 Euros you can take a taxi from the hotel to drop you at the door (remember the seedy characters at night, its not worth going through a bad experience like getting mugged when you can take a cheap taxi). The restaurant is recommended for its friendly staff and for its delicious local cuisine at local prices. In fact, it is frequented by locals which ought to be an indication of its quality. We had the best seafood rice ever here as well as some fantastic baked cod, steak and chips, and pork alentejana (pork chunks in a parsley and white wine sauce with peas and clams, served with chips). They serve massive portions big enough for two so be warned! House wine was under 4 Euros for a bottle! However we stuck to refreshing Portuguese Green wine for a couple more Euros.
Overall, the hotel staff were obliging, polite and fairly friendly. They were prepared to store our luggage on our final day and call us a taxi to the airport so we cannot complain.
This hotel has many great things going for it. It is modern and clean, it is located right next to the Anjos Metro station and their catering is great. The reason why I am giving it a 3* rating and not 5* however is because if they insist on overbooking, then why should I book with them in the future, when I wont know for sure that I will end up staying with them. This is an issue that they need to address if they are to retain visitors in the future. Book with Travel Park Hotel and you just might end up staying with them!
