“Great time at the Solpay”

This is an excellent hotel with well deserved 4 star rating. The staff are extremely helpful and courteous. The rooms are large and very clean, the maid service is the best I have seen for a long time. We met the manager, a very friendly and helpful gentleman, who regularly walks around the hotel chatting to guests and ensuring thal all is spotless. He took the time to ask us how we were enjoying our stay and if there was anything else the hotel could do for us. Later on that day he arranged for some complementary drinks and fruit in our room

We stayed for 10 days in Aug07 and could find anything of concern. In terms of location it is not far from Belem (10 minute drive) and around 20 minutes from the centre of Lisbon. We drove everywhere and had no problems at all (the hotel has free underground parking).

The apartment we stayed had a well equipped kitchen and even a washer-dryer, the large balcony (with deckchairs) and breakfast table was also very good.

We hope to return to Solplay soon.

Very impressive. Some staff friendlier than others but all courteous and efficient. My wife and son and I had a two-bedroom apartment (with two bathrooms, kitchenette and balcony), which was completely cleaned daily. The buffet breakfast, included in the price, is excellent and broad-ranging and is available from 7.00 to 10.30 am. There are indoor and outdoor pools, and a little private cinema that you can book as you wish to watch a list of English-language or other movies. Also a well-equipped gym, steam room and outdoor tennis court that doubles as an Astra mini-soccer court. All facilities are included in the price. Rooms facing the river estuary and sea have the nicest view. There is no beach nearby.

There is a system of uniformed Solplay drivers you can book. Although it works out between 50% and 100% more than fairly low priced taxis, we had a couple of unpleasant experiences with taxi drivers re route, price and/or standard of driving at speed and would recommend the hotel cars for their quality and comfort.

Busses into Lisbon and down to the coastal railway at Alges (betwen Estoril/Cascais and Lisbon) may be boarded every twenty minutes from the Rua Manuel Ferreira, just out the main gate and right around the corner.

There is also an ATM a little past these bus stops by the small supermarket and cafe on the right. The no. 11 leaves you at the Marques de Pompal roundabout at the top of the Avenida da Liberdade (and you can get it gack to the hotel from this same stop in Lisbon: fare 2.50).

Down the hill from the hotel, just five to ten minutes walk away on Avenida Don Pedro V, are grocery shops and a couple of nice coffee/pastry places, a pizza takeaway and a number of little restaurants. We ate three times at a friendly and busy local bistro called "A Grelha" (Rua Antero de Quental no. 22-B, having turned right for a block off Pedro V) and found it better quality and value than most the meals we had in Lisbon. By the way, all Fado places in Lisbon are pretty much for tourists. We had a pleasant Fado dinner at "Ja Disse" on Rua Diario de Noticias in Bairo Alto, although the food may be better (and is dearer) at nearby Cafe Luso.

Travel:
15euro taxi fare from the Airport. 2.5euro bus fare from hotel into the center of Lisbon, about 25 minutes (number 11 from outside the Hotel).

General:
Hotel was very quiet in June, we usually had the pool and often the restaurant to ourselves. Service was good (usually more staff than guests), although the desk-clarke was not overly friendly.

Good:
The quality of food in the restaurant was high (a 3 course dinner for two, plus decent wine was circa 80euros). Excellent spread at breakfast with everything on offer. Pretty good service in general. Decent bar menu too - lunch and drinks served out to the pool. The apartment / suite ['superior room'] was excellent - good size lounge, excellent facilities (fridge/freezer/cooker/toaster/kettle), and all spotless. Furniture good, nice double doors from lounge and bedroom onto large balcony with two loungers, table and chairs. Nice decoration throughout the apartment and hotel in general. Excellent views from balcony. Modern and spacious feel, well designed, and good facilities. Pools and surrounding were very clean and well maintained.

Bad:
The swimming pool bar wasn't open, but I guess this was due to the timing - a few weeks later this would be open and busy. A few of the massage / spa treatments weren't available. Sea views don't mean close beaches - you'll need a car or be prepared to spend a lot on taxis. No-where worth visiting within walking distance. Getting into Lisbon was easy with public transport though.

Summary:
Very good facilities, clean, modern, good service and decent food. In the middle of nowhere by foot, but a good position for Lisbon by bus/car. Finally, great city, but watch out for Mondays - many of the attractions are closed.

“Wonderful hotel”

Like everyone else has written ---Excellent! Has everything you need right in the hotel. If you don't have a car, like us, you can walk to neighborhood markets. We walked about 20 mins. to a big grocery store which had everything. It was a rather hilly walk so some people may not be up to it. There is also the #11 Bus stop right near the hotel which takes you to Marques Pombal on the main street downtown. From there it's a little walk on a beautiful street to get to the more touristy area. I can't say much more than the other reviews other than we would definately go back there again. It was the lap of luxury!!!

Second visit equally as good as the first.

Excellent staff and service.

Hotel drivers first rate and highly recommended as are the concierge team.

Only disappointment was the very limited food available late in the evening despite the best efforts of the bar staff to help.
