“Romantic Hotel”

Aviz Hotel

We stayed in Aviz Hotel for one week. We liked that it had the air of an old luxurios hotel, with few signs of modernity. This was a plus, we chose it, we found romantic that many personalities had spent their time in their hotel during years.
The hotel has a great location, in Marques de Pombal Square. Not great for those who insist on having a good view from the hotel windows (you can only see buildings).
As minuses: the room was very small, yet the bathroom was ok, but wasn't ventilated (only by window).
The breakfast was ok, but repeating every day (if you have a longer stay in the hotel, it's definitely a minus).
The personnel was helpful and service-oriented.
We would reccommend it to pensioners and couples rather than for business or fun.

We spent a very nice week-end in Aviz Hotel. The hotel has a great 'old school' atmosphere around it. The rooms are clean, comfortable and well-maintained, the staff is very helpful and courteous. It is close to the metro station and only 10-15 minutes stroll along Av. da Liberdade to the Rossio Square.
The breakfast in the restaurant is a ‘must’ and I also quite enjoyed dinner there although I am usually not a fan of ‘hotel restaurant’ dining.

This is an excellent small hotel, well located, and well managed.
Some rooms appear to have a very limited outlook as the windows face to the back of the hotel where one can see only other buildings. In a side street so quieter.

Breakfast was really good, sparkling wine, extensive range of fruit, cereals, freshly squeezed OJ, meats and cheeses as well as excellent bread and some hot food too. Nice china and table linen added to the overall pleasure.

Was lucky to be upgraded to suite, very nice. Huge firm bed, quality bed linen, pretty soft furnishings, two TVs, fully marble bathroom (bath a bit small and shallow), dressing room, sitting room. Wooden floors with rugs. Good AC. Room make up service was always very quick.

Overall a feel of quality, and cleanliness.

Some TA writers have critised the location at Marquis Pombal square. I agree it is not right in the centre of the historical centre, this takes about 20 mins to reach by foot, south down the Avenue of Liberation, the main avenue into the old town. But it is 50 m from an underground station from which you can go in 4 directions. 40 m to the bus stop for the 22 and 44(could be 45) bus which take you directly to the airport in 25 mins. A day pass for buses/trains is about €3, very good value. We bought ours in the square around the Rossi station.

Note the Rossi station, which you would use to go to Sintra from Lisbon is currently closed.

The excellent Gubenkian Museum is not far, 20 mins walk north. Great range of art, and not too big and daunting as is the Louvre in Paris

There is an excellent restuarant right opposite called Pena (something like that) which has the feel of an old english pub, with beamed ceiling etc. We spent £100 for 2, but that was incl 3 x 1/2 bottles of wine (superb tastes), aperitif, 4 courses, coffee. I've not had such good service in a restaurant for a long time.

People guide you to the Alto Baio region for restaurants and nightlife. I was very disappointed with this part of town. Lots of graffiti, and although there were lots of places to eat, the tables were really jammed in. Much prefered Alfama region and can recommend a meal in one of the restaurants where the local Fado style of music is sung. It's a nice experience, the music is moody and atmospheric.

The trip up to the castle St Jorge is fun with great views, but there's not much to see other than views and walls. The 28 tram takes you there.

Brest prices via Venere, would go here if came back. A real treat.

We spent two nights at the Aviz after reading reviews. Very nice room and huge marble bathroom. The only slight annoyance was that the lighting was too dim to read.
We found the staff to be extremely helpful, especially those who had worked in the original hotel.
Breakfast was very good, even champagne if you wanted it. Dining room was smaller than I imagined but beautiful chandeliers.
Situated in the business district, so very quiet in the evenings. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go and felt quite safe(2 females).
I would stay again if going back to Lisbon.

Stayed there for 3 nights while we discovered lovely Lisboa. We stayed at the Frank Sinatra Suite, the suite was really big and comfy. About the largest I´ve ever been. Price on the low range of what one could expect in Europe. Food was delicious, great Portuguese wine list. Staff very kind. And patiente with our small kid. Would go back to this place when we return to Lisbon (soon!)
