This place looks the goods from the outside - a genuine heritage building - and was easy to spot from the cab once we got into Ave Liberdade: "Yep, that's the place ... the blue building". Too easy.
I actually love boutique hotels as they offer a bit more in terms of character. It's great to stay in five-star luxury, but big cities like Lisbon can be pretty funky, so if you can find something a bit more relaxed right in the heart of town, it's worth it.
This place ticks all the boxes for me. My room was a beauty on the fifth floor and looked out over rooftops, and directly on to the funicular tram going up and down the hill behind. It was how I imagined Lisbon to be and then it was a short walk downtown to the shopping district and the waterfront, where you can catch the No. 28 tram (Electricos 28) around Graca, the Alfama, Baixa and Bairro Alto, Chiado and Estrela - and of course it's the preferred form of transport up to the Castelo de Sao Jorge. I gave the tram a fair workout.
One of the things I loved about Portugal and which made me feel immediately at home was the smell ... it reminded me of the big cities of urban, coastal Australia - the smell of dust in the air, sunscreen carried on the breeze, and the heat. Even the sky looks the same colour, and like Australians, Portuguese love to sit outside and drink decent coffee. So having been made to feel at ease by all this olfactory action, I think it was the people that made this experience really special. Quite simply, the Portuguese are a pretty cool bunch of people - and they seem to love speaking English, which you won't find in their bigger Iberian neighbour.
The hotel staff were great, and extremely helpful with explanations of how to get around and what to do. The rooms are immaculate and nicely finished and the location is perfect ... a hop, skip and a jump from the restaurant district. I also gave them a few bags of washing that came back intact and didn't break the bank.
Pinoquio's restaurant is a few minutes' walk from the hotel, just near the entrance to the subway, and is a great place to eat if you're after the authentic Portuguese deal at a reasonable price. Try the others down the road a bit, too ... but this was the place I liked.
The buffer breakfast at the hotel was fantastic, so all in all, a pretty damn fantastic experience for this wide-eyed little black duck.
A special memory, really, of a trip that didn't have any downside except for a marathon four-day trip home after being stranded by a certain well-known Australian airline in both Frankfurt and Singapore on the way home. The upside of that: at least I got to have a quick look at Frankfurt and to practise my schoolboy German during a 24-hour layover while they fixed an engine.
