We had a lovely stay with Luis, Jorge, and Juan at Zuzabed last week. The guest care and attention that they offer can't be beat! The rooms are spacious and breakfast hearty and healthy. They even provided a local cell phone so that we could call and ask for any traveller advice during our walks through Lisbon. It is located in the heart of the old city, so be prepared to walk up plenty of steps to experience the real flavor of this wonderful city. The train station is practically next door, and the metro stop is close. The views from your windows of the castle cannot be beat, and you will find yourself among friends here, even if you are only a tourist.

As a Travel Operator (Scandinavian), you may easily realize that I travel a lot and I can tell you that most of my time is travelling for professional reasons and I always decide for Inn’s, B&B’s and all this kind of accommodation in order to be able to meet much better the local atmosphere of the places I have/want to visit.

Said that, I really want to share with all the TripAdvisor (my bible) readers that after thousands of professional/leisure travels around the world I’ve never met a place (Inn/B&B) that combines in a perfect way all the things a traveller really need when far from home:

5 STARS PRIME LOCATION - in Lisbon you can’t ask for a better place to be. You can’t beat this wonderful location with an astonishing view to the castle from all rooms, with a very central location and in a few minutes walking distance you reach everything you should visit as a tourist and even better you are close of all the main spots preferred by the locals, and that gives you the chance to meet the natural and local atmosphere of Lisbon – Baixa/Rossio/Barrio Alto/Carmo/Alfama/Castelo, etc. Yes, it is half way on a Lisbon stairway up hill (or down depending from where you’re coming from) without traffic, but when you decide to visit Lisbon you should know in advance that while visiting this lovely city you’ll be always going up/down hill otherwise you never get to meet well the charming Lisbon.
Therefore the stairs can’t be a reason to complain at all, otherwise you should decide for a flat country like Holland/Netherlands for your travel destination. In Lisbon going up and down is something you can’t avoid. I’m about to be 65 and I found them to be no problem at all.

5 STARS COMFORT ROOMS – Zuzabed goes much further on all details in order to make our stay much comfortable as possible in all ways also when you’re in room. After travelling for 2 weeks jumping from bed to bed in Italy, France, Portugal and Spain I have to say that Zuzabed’s mattress was by far the BEST of all the ones I had at the end of this travel and I’m not lying if I say in the last year – when travelling. The rooms (I had the chance to see two other rooms) are amazingly comfortable and the perfection on everything is incredible – beautiful and clean decoration ideal to relax provided us a quiet atmosphere; mine was the red one right next to the living room and that gave ne the chance to feel like I had a suite. The quality of the equipments not cheap and bad stuff as usual (perfect mattress and pillows, room and toilette amenities (full of useful details thinking on your comfort, and some of them you don’t even find it on a 4 or 5 stars hotel and if yes they’ll ask you for sure for a extra payment. Luis at Zuzabed give it to you for free.

5 STARS BRIGHT CLEANLINESS – Perfect daily cleaning service in rooms as in all the common areas. You can see yourself on the tab as if you are looking to a mirror.

5 STARS HOTEL SERVICE – Someone wrote also here on TripAdvisor that Luis loves what he does, and oh yes that is 150% true. Stay at Zuzabed is not travel into a foreigner city but is definitely like if you were visiting your friend Luis that does everything for you (and for free) and I felt that since the 1st email although to say it was fully booked 3 months ahead. Once I was definitely decided to stay there I was lucky enough to have a much positive reply from Luis after my travel re-schedule.
Being hosted at Zuzabed is something that as a traveller I will never forget after all the very important help Luis provided us. So many enthusiasm about his city, joy of meeting people and help them to feel at home in a strange place. A JEWEL. Great tips on local restaurants he loves as Portuguese.

5 STARS BEST VALUE – As said before as a traveller and after checking my travel files/records at home I don’t remember any other place that combines perfection on everything on this Inn/B&B style. What can I add more after all that I’ve said before.
If you consider yourself a good shopper and want spend very well your money there’s no excuse to go someplace else, unless is full which is normal. That’s why while there I’ve booked for September and believe it or not I didn’t had the chance to choose the room. Only one was available. I’m lucky.

5 STARS HEALTHY VARIETY BREAKFAST – Amazing delicious BIG selection where everything and more I’m used to have for breakfast is available. And all is fresh served at the beautiful table set at the living room where all mornings we had long chats together with all the other guests. The perfect way to start the day “learning” from Luis’s Lisbon experience.

CONGRATULATIONS for the amazing place you created. There should be a ZUZABED everywhere. See you again in September for another Amargiña (Portuguese almond liqueur).

Luis is a perfect host and local guardian of the city - he knows what you need before you know it yourself whether it be some binoculars to see the views from the castle or the best local Fado bar. The guesthouse has perfect views of the old city of Lisboa and is a perfect base for getting around the city. Staying with Luis is an experience that is personal and fun without being intrusive and he provides a perfect introduction to the city that you would never find in an impersonal hotel: as Luis himself will say, he doesn't want his guests to be referred to as the number of their room. All the reviews are fantastic and they are all true. Zuzabed is worth going out of your way for even if Portugal is not on your agenda.

It's really true: all the glowing reviews of Zuzabed and Luis Zuzarte himself are accurate. We've stayed at many lovely b&bs, but we have never received the attention to detail that Luis provides. We stayed for 4 nights, and can verify that he simply CANNOT do enough for his guests. To save us time and effort, he volunteered to pick up our train tickets to the Algarve, and had a taxi waiting for us to get to the train station easily. His eating recommendations, sightseeing tips, etc., are superb, and he also sets up a perfect atmosphere of comradery among his guests. It's easy to spend a leisurely breakfast hour (fresh fruit salad, rolls, toast, pastries, meat, cheese, eggs, yoghurt, juice, coffee, tea: wow!), talking with Luis who always arrives to chat with a variety of guests around the table. We even enjoyed a "happy hour" of conversation and Port early one evening, at Luis' suggestion. He genuinely enjoys his guests as friends, and the feeling is reciprocal!
As others have cautioned, this is not an accommodation for those who cannot navigate stairs, but how could one see Lisbon without climbing everywhere? While we stayed in Castle Terrace for 3 nights and moved to a smaller room for the last night, we wouldn't hesitate to stay with Luis and accept whatever room was available. It's worth the visit!
The location is excellent for walking almost everywhere -- it's a stone's throw from Rossio Station, and we walked everwhere in the old town. We only needed public transportation to travel to Belem, but did ride tram 28 for the experience.
The only difficult thing about sharing excellent reviews about Luis and Zuzabed is that those of us who HAVE to stay with Luis on a return visit will never be able to secure a room since we've "spilled the beans" on this excellent gem!! Luis truly deserves the praise he receives.

I have never posted a review before but felt compelled to after staying at Zuzabed. This place really is as good as the other reviews say.

After recieving a wonderfully warm welcome Luis showed us to our rooms. Beautifully decorated in a modern style, clean and with every little extra you could wish for. Once Luis had discussed with us how we would like to spend our short but very sweet stay in Lisbon he recommended bars, restaurants and sights - all of which were perfect for us. The location of Zuzabed is perfect too, quiet but within 5 minutes walk to the bars and restaurants and all the sights. The breakfasts are second to none and the breakfast banter sets you up for the rest of the day.

When I go back to Lisbon I won't stay anywhere else.
