We spent a week at the Promenade on a Thomson package at end May. This modern (only2-3yrs old) hotel has lovely stylish public rooms, a wonderful garden and pool complex (including "inifinity" pool), with plenty of sunbeds and comfortable water temperature. Our bedroom was on the ground floor with small private patio (instead of balcony) leading directly onto the garden/ pool area - wonderful. The room itself was spacious, nicely designed with comfortable beds, settee, small chaise longe, table etc. Small but very useful fridge, widescreenTV with lots of channels and ample storage space. Spacious bathroom, including full size bath with shower over, although a grab handle by the shower would have been useful for older people. Air conditioning in the bedroom was available, but not needed during our stay. All immaculately clean.
We had a persistent minor problem with the toilet in our bathroom one day. However, this was promptly fixed on reporting it to Reception. Full marks to the maintenance team.
Breakfast was a comprehensive buffet of hot and cold food etc - very good quality and kept well topped up all the time. We did not have dinner at the hotel; dinner menus looked interesting but were on the expensive side - in line with the four star status of the hotel I suppose. We used several nearby restaurants, which served a wide range of cuisine at attractive prices, and also had dinner in Funchal town. One downside of Madeira though is Restaurant touts, who are a complete nuisance bordering on harrassment! Browsing in order to select a restaurant is very uncomfortable.
The Promenade hotel is situated a couple of miles outside Funchal centre but a bus service (No 1 or No2) operates about every ten minutes from just above the hotel at a fare of only 1.25euro per trip if you purchase a prepaid bus ticket in advance from a wine shop near the bus stop. We walked into Funchal one day but would not recommend it as it is along a busy main road and not very pleasant. Also the walk is quite exhausting even at a leisurely pace - better to go by bus so you don't arrive exhausted.
All in all we had a very pleasant stay at the Promenade hotel and in Madeira. A couple of tips:
1) A wide range of day and half day excursions are available. We used Madeira Happy Tours based in the nearby Lido shopping centre. Well organised, pick up and return to hotel, and excellent value. For example the Nuns Valley half day tour was less than half the price charged by Thomson for the same itinerary.
2) A popular trip is up to Monte from Funchal. You can use the cable car ,,at a cost of 15euro per person return, which can be quite exciting if you have never been in a cable car before. As we are regular travellers to the alps, cable cars are not a novelty to us and we discovered that you can go to Monte by bus (frequent service from Funchal) travelling through little communities on the way via the twisting steep road. It takes only 15-20 minutes and the cost is only 1.25euro each way.
Ground floor rooms have direct access to garden/ pool but obviously do not have as good a sea view a...
