I visited the Sacred Art Museum in Funchal in February 2008 when it cost just EU 3.00, (I found almost all ticket prices in Madeira to be of excellent value). You'll find it in the Municipal Square or Praca do Municipio.
The opulence and riches of the Church in previous centuries are much in evidence here. There are artifacts made of gold and silver with inlays of gems and crystal, as well as painted, inlaid, wooden carvings. I found a large 17th century sculpture depicting the Last Supper quite interesting, the figures are arranged in near life-sized proportions.
Along with the riches in precious metal, (including the large processional cross given to Funchal Cathedral by King Manual I in 1528), there are some bishops ceremonial robes which are incredibly ornate and sewn with lavish attention to detail. The dedication of those who embroidered them must have been great indeed.
The museum also houses a large number of paintings, Flemish as well as Portuguese, and possibly one of the largest collections of wood board paintings (16th century, mostly Flemish I think). These resemble the icons of Eastern churches but have their own style of iconography. I have read that the medieval Flemish sacred paintings are regarded as one of the most impressive and comprehensive collections to be found under one roof. I leave it to the more knowledgeable to judge!
