If you want to visit one garden while in Madeira, you could do a lot worse than choose Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. There is an element of fun here that you may not get at a regular botanical garden, and I expect children will much prefer the Monte experience. The downside is that it is a relatively expensive outing. I paid EU 10.00 for a single ticket to the gardens & museum. This included a free glass of Madeira wine at the café (tucked away at the bottom of the grounds), and a map&info leaflet. The relatively new, and very modern cable-car system is the easiest way to get to Monte, and the gardens are right next to the station. For a combined ticket to the Madeira Story Centre and a return cable-car to Monte I paid EU 21.00. Not too bad, but add the garden entrance fee. I think the cable-car ride took about 15-20 mins.
The Palace Gardens are a wonderful labyrinth of paths, steps, inclines, declines, bridges, ponds, waterfalls, stonework, azulejos tiles, sculptures, historical presentations, fish, swans, chickens, and at least one peacock! It is lush and green and varied, large enough to spend a leisurely few hours in (especially if you add the museum and café), and has lots of nooks and hidden gems to discover.
A few features: Japanese garden, tallest vase in the world, 16th-20th century tiles, koi fish, orchids, 1000 year-old olive trees, curious waterfall/lake, and of course the views.
