Would have been the perfect break if it had not rained almost every day

My husband is disabled and the staff really put themselves out to help us, particularly the receptionists and the temporary bus driver. The steps to the front of the hotel are quite steep without any rails and not easy for anyone with walking problems but the receptionists came out to help us. The gardens are beautiful but the paths are cobbled making them slippery when wet. It was unfortunate that it was raining most of the time as being on a hillside, the hotel was at times shrouded in mist. We stayed B&B and the breakfasts were very good with everything fresh, including their delicious home made cakes. We tried the evening table d'hote but 5 courses were too much and found the a la carte menu more to our liking. Service was fantastic at dinner with great attention to detail. Courtesy bus service was very good and punctual. Receptionists very knowledgeable with advice on restaurants and best museums.

We stayed at this hotel for one week. Service is the best we have received in any hotel we have stayed. They made our stay great.
No noise at all, so calm at the swimming pool, what a view of the city...

Ideal out of town location away from the madding crowd of Funchal. It has wonderful views of the sea and mountains and especially of Funchal at night. Impeccable service and attention to detail. Management open to constructive suggestions. A la carte, table d'hote and bar menues were excellent but a bit expensive

This was a terrifically lucky find, splendid small period hotel with rooms with great views of the harbour and cruise ships, an excellent location a short walk from the town and in the Old part of town, much better than the mega hotel quarter on the other side of the harbour. Great staff, lovely gardens, classy foyer and public areas but non-intimidating. Great breakfast, clean spacious and comfortable rooms. Highly recommended for couples. We would go no-where else in Funchal.

We loved this hotel. The location being a mile or so out of the centre of Funchal suited us as it was so peaceful with very little traffic noise. We didn't hire a car but used the hotel's courtesy bus service into and out of Funchal (though this didn't run on Saturday afternoon or Sundays) and also made the most of the service bus from the end of the street.

Our room (we upgraded to a superior) was wonderful. It was spacious and clean with a lovely bathroom. The doors leading out to the cosy balcony had a mosquito net screen which enabled us to leave the actual doors open the whole time we were there. The bed was extremely comfortable.

The pool bar was a lovely, peaceful place to sit in the evening with a bottle of wine overlooking the lights and coastline of Funchal. They also served wonderful pasta and other hot/cold meals/snacks.

The old manor house restaurant was fabulous with wonderful food and service, though you did pay for the privilege.

All the staff at the hotel were impeccable. They were all extremely professional and courteous and nothing was too much trouble for them, but without being obtrusive. The reception staff in particular had the answers to all our queries regarding booking walks, opening times of attractions and the local bus routes.

We loved the service and ambience of this family run hotel.

We would have liked tea/coffee making facilities in the room but maybe this isn't the done thing in Madeira/Portugal.
