A great hotel if you want somewhere relatively inexpensive in Madeira. Staff were excellent getting us tickets for Maritimo football game and providing a travel adaptor (which we had forgotten). The breakfasts were good value(although slightly repetative) but worth getting included in your price. Our apartment overlooked the main road but this is not very busy during the late evening and night and the balcony gives a great sea view. The hotel is in the main tourist area but well served by public transport. A fantastic local bar just up the cala branca - try the prego - amazing but you need to like garlic!!!
Pool was wonderful(although not heated) with plenty of room for the sunloungers. Maid service was great. Overall a great hotel for a week in the sun in january!!

The Florasol Hotel is part of the group Dorisol.
Situated about appr.10 minutes (by bus), close to the hotel are bus stops (n.1.2.4.6), appr.30 minutes (walking) from the centre of Funchal and close to The Lido Sol(300 m. walk) and part of the hotel is directly at the main and busy street Estrada Monumental. We had a room directly at the main street, yes it's loud but personally I enjoyed it coz the big balcony had a nice view (partly on the ocean) and always something to watch on the street:). Nothing for light sleepers but for me it was fine. The room was generous with small a kitchen block and a microwave, a nice bathroom with good facilities.
Breakfast was good, divers sorts of bread, fruits, etc, + always eggs boiled or scrambled:) and the main thing: coffee was very good!
Swimming pool and sunbathing-area were good! Towels also for free.
Supermarket, restaurants, post office, rent a car, all within 3 minutes.
Minus (if one wants to be picky)
-Elevator, small and very slow!
-Restaurant Tropical too expensive!
-Personal, manly personal at reception very kind and
helpful the most female personal arrogant, always busy
(With what??) and uninterested.
Female personal in breakfast room nice but got confused
every time their silly female boss, showed up, haha she
was more a burden then help!
Cleaning personal, inaccurate and not alert, must say
that they were very polite and helpful but I think one
doesn't have to ask for the things that are needed:)
-No free/pick up transport from and to the airport.
-To little information flyers at reception desk.

We stayed for week as part of a last minute bed & breakfast package. The hotel is not in the first flush of youth but is well maintained and clean. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The pool area on the 4th floor overlooking the sea was clean, the pool was unheated. Breakfast room is small but the food is plentiful and there is enough of a variety including scrambled eggs and fruit.
There is a small bar as part of the ground floor restaurant which opens in the evenings. There is another larger restaurant on the 4th floor. We didn't eat at either only because there are so many choices close by in the area with all tastes catered for. Our room was a good size and had a small kitchen area including electric hob, sink & microwave with crockery etc. supplied so self catering is easy. The supermarket is about 100m to the left of the hotel with a good choice of basic foods & also a very good cafe with fresh hot food and salads on offer all day. The cake & coffee shop is 100m the other way, probably the best choice of cakes on the island! The post office is on the way to the supermarket as alongside is an ATM cash point. Funchal centre is about 10 minutes on the yellow bus from outside the hotel and the hotel runs its own free shuttle bus into the centre. Rooms on the 2nd & 3rd Floors overlook the road. Floors 5/12 are set further back and the balconies on one side overlook the pool with a sea view.

  • Liked — Good for the price paid at a destination with plenty to see & do.
  • Disliked — No real bar with space to relax and socialise or make new friends.

This hotel is cheap - we paid £36 per night in August for 1 bedroom apartments, including breakfast - but dont expect a fantastic hotel - it is ok but (and there are a few buts) there are a few negs which it is good to be aware of before arrival

1)we were given the wrong room type on arrival - receptionist shrugged his shoulders in a very dont care way.

2) the rooms - although clean and recently refurbished are a bit on the grotty side. Nothing wrong with the cleaning staff but the tiles need redoing badly in bathroom, there was a smell of cooking oil that invaded the place unless the extractor fan was on in the kitchen all day, the bedroom carpet was very grubby and the balconies looked like they needed a good wash and polish.

3) Noise - rooms at back and front get noise from roads, dogs, and extractor fans from neighbouring hotel air con systems. There is also noise in the day due to refurb of Raga Hotel next door (due to finish October 06). Rooms not overlooking the swimming pool towards the back of the hotel also get live entertainment every night from the restaurant below - doesnt go on too late but could still be an irritant.

4) Lifts - only 2 for 12 floors, very old, very slow, very prone to breaking down when not being used by cleaning staff to ferry towels around. One of them would bounce on arrival at a floor.

OK those are the bad bits out of the way. Now the pluses

Price - we got an exceptionally good deal but hotel is always a lot cheaper than comparable hotels and is always fairly full

Staff are on the whole great and fairly friendly. Receptionist who was in a dont care attitude on the first day sorted out the room problem and got us a free meal in the restaurant.

Location is very central for Lido area - good base for jumping on public transport into Funchal.

Size of apartments is very good. Very generous double bedroom, sperate kitchen, generous living room with dining area, 2 balconies. The studios seem an ok size too.

Breakfast is ok . Bought in hotel it would cost 5.5E - it was included in our rate. Basic but fresh. Bread, ham, cheese, boiled eggs, cornflakes, cheerios, jam, honey, yoghurt, croissants, horrid artificial juice, decent enough coffee, tea, milk, hot chocolate. You help yourself - all very low key, you sit where you want.

The swimming pool area was adequate - nothing special but ok for a few hours lounging in the sun. There is some noise from the construction next door (that will be finished soon), this is ok. (definately not more than 3* but ok). There is a small kids play area.

The hotel is part of a chain - and guest can use facilities at the other hotels (that are slightly more expensive). To be honest, we never even bothered to check the other hotels out (they are located further up hill) - we did catch the courtesy bus once (check times with reception). There is a gym and various entertainment options.

I wouldnt go back to this hotel out of choice - but it was a cheap option for a family holiday this year. Hardly spent time in the hotel during the day as we were out at various places. I chose it because of the location and because there was a kitchen and seperate sleeping area (handy with kids). We never pulled the sofabed out but it was very comfortable for one tall person without pulling out. The hotel provided a very good cot free of charge for our 3 year old (it was a long cot). Despite the negative points I listed above, we still had a great holiday and the free meal made up for the room mix up. The staff on the whole were helpful, polite and friendly.

If your idea of a holiday is to hang round the pool all day, then this hotel is not for you. If like us, you tend to go out and about almost every day, then this is fairly cheap option.

  • Liked — Room size
  • Disliked — smell in kitchen
  • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — try to get one of the rooms on the front or overlooking pool on high floor

Do not be fooled by the photographs. They are truly deceptive. For a start, the hotel is not directly onto the beach. You cross a busy main road and then have quite a distance to get to the beach. Most of the vista is hidden by all the hotels on the sea-side of the road.
This is a horrid hotel. I believed that I had booked a suite with 2 double beds and a separate seating area. Given that I was with my wife and my young child, this expectation had to be met. There was considerable confusion with the booking prior to my arrival but I was reliably informed by hotel staff that all would be ok.

Therefore, when I arrived to find that the accommodation comprised of 2 single beds (in 1 bedroom) and a fold away bed in the living area, I was extremely disappointed and made this clear to your staff upon arrival. Given that we were on the eighth floor and the safety of my child is paramount, it meant that my wife and child had to sleep in the bedroom whilst I had to sleep in the living area on a foldaway bed. Not ideal to say the least. Given that this was the height of Summer and the rooms had no air conditioning, totally unaccpetable
Therefore, I was forced to look elsewhere as we were not prepared to spend 14 days on holiday living and sleeping in such unsatisfactory conditions.

The staff were totally unhelpful in securing alternative accommodation.
In addition, my letter of complaint to them written in August 2005 still remains unanswered. There is no customer value here. The rooms feel dirty and I would never stay there again.

Please do not let this put you off going to Madeira because the people are wonderful and the hotel we moved to (Carlton Pestana) is superb.
