Most of the standard guide books have levada walks and there is a specialist guide book by Sunflower books, "Walk and Eat in Madeira". This offers a range of walks with details of public transport to use and restaurants and cafes en route. You do not have to follow the long circular tours just walk a bit and turn round when you are ready.
There is a stretch of levada available from Monte at the top of the cable car- after a stiff scramble up the levada is level walking with smooth footing but the channel clings precipitously to the cliff although there is some protective fencing.
As well as the levadas exploring the San Lorenco Point at the Eastern tip of the island offers some spectacular coastal views.
