During our stay in Funchal last year (June 2007), my mum and I decided to visit these orchid gardens after our trip to the botanical garden and bird park. After a winding uphill walk along little narrow streets, we eventually came across Pregetter's Orchid Garden. At first glance, it didn't appear very impressive - there was a small area for refreshments to the front. But, once you have paid your admission and entered - well, it is definitely worth the walk. The variety of orchids on show is amazing - they are just so beautiful it takes your breath away. Definitely worth the effort to get there for anyone who appreciates the beauty of orchids.
