The Hilton Athens is located near the city center of Athens, and a 35-40 Euro cab ride from the airport, or a 6 Euro subway ride and a short walk from the station across the road from the Hilton. One downside to the subway is it only leaves the airport every thirty minutes.
The hotel is clean and modern, and is close to many of the tourist areas of Athens. The executive floor on 11 offers a good view of the city and a typical executive lounge fare of drinks and continental breakfast. The rooftop bar on the top floor offers a great view at sundown.
Although high quality hotels are relatively limited in downtown Athens, and the Hilton is one of the better properties, I can suggest three things that one should consider when staying at this property.
1) The internet at this property – rots. There is a system for wireless (WiFi) which works in the lobby and on the 11th floor executive lounge. There is another DIFFERENT system that works in your room. At a “mere” 29 euros per day, at a business hotel, one should expect an integrated system that allows the use of wired and wireless internet. And, one should expect a system that works! At this Hilton, you get the “privilege’ of buying two services if you are going to do any work in your room – and outside of your room. In addition, the internet in the conference rooms downstairs didn’t work at all. Complaints to the management were met with a bit of puzzled looks, and when informed that I was a frequent traveler they suggested that they might look into it, but then again, who knows.
2) This property is near two major roads. I have attached a photo from our balcony to show the view and the traffic. Even being on the 12th floor, the road noise at night was more than one would expect. There isn’t much the hotel can do about this, but you should be aware if you are a light sleeper.
3) Taxis in Athens continue to be a challenge for me. Apparently, if you have the doorman wave a taxi to pick you up, there is a 3 euro surcharge. In addition to being ripped off coming from the Airport on prior trips (hence the suggestion of taking the subway) and being charged 37 euros to go to the Airport from the Hilton in spite of the meter reading 23 euros, I can only offer the suggestion of “buyer beware”.
Overall, the hotel itself is fairly nice, and the location is convenient to many locations downtown, as long as you don’t need the internet (or can afford to spend a lot on two internet purchases) this can be a good place to stay.
