OUTSTANDING! That's how we rate not only the hotel but the service and especially the personnel. After a less than enjoyable ride into town, thanks to protesters, we arrived thinking Athens may have been a mistake. Those thoughts were removed by the people of the Athens Gate. We were greeted with ice water and traditional Greek pastry/candy. The front desk made their services for tours available and the fine folks in the BEST bar/cafe were great. All in all, our trip to Athens was made by these fine people.

Fab location, close to Plaka restaurants and shops. Amazing views from roof top bar of Acropolis and Temple of Olympian Zeus (esp at night). Room was stylish and clean with view as promised. Friendly staff and good breakfast. I am so often disappointed with hotels, but this was a great place to stay. Highly recommend it!

“Perfect location”

The Athens Gate Hotel

8 May 2008

Stayed our first night in Athens at Athens Gate and were able to get to see most of the sights that day from this location, including their great views from the roof restaurant. Easy walk to the Acropolis and the Plaka. Room tastefully decorated and very clean. By comparison, the tour company booked the Stanley for our return to Athens and it was dirty and in an unsafe area. Stay at the Athens Gate and book Spiro's taxi for your tour and you will have good memories!

“Great Value and Location”

The Athens Gate Hotel

7 May 2008

My wife and I were returning from a weekend on the islands and needed a place to stay for one night in Athens. We frequent Greece and have always stayed in the Hilton but we were travelling with friends and trying to save some money so we decided to try The Athens Gate. We were not sure what to expect for 150 EUR in Athens but were very happy with what we found.

The hotel is clean and very well maintained (actually, newly remodelled is a more apt description). The service from the staff was very good. The rooms on the rear of the hotel are quiet. A couple travelling with us were in the front with a great view of the Temple of Olympian Zeuss but they said the room was pretty noisy due to morning traffic. The location is a short walk to all the sights and only a couple blocks from a Metro stop.

I have been back for three days and already recommended the hotel to two people already. Great deal.

Stayed at the Athens Gate for 5 nights in late April – early May. Selected the hotel based on the Trip Advisor reviews and was not disappointed!
Location
The location is perfect for tourists wishing to explore the historical part of Athens. Acropolis is about 5 minute walk from the hotel; Agora and Pnyx about 10 min away. The National Archaeological museum is just 3 metro stops away.
There’s a minimarket on Diakou st next to the hotel (turn right as you leave the hotel then right again) in case you’d like to stock up on some fruit and snacks.
Having said that, do not underestimate the value of the previous comment on this site on the noise that comes from the Syngrou avenue, which is busy 24/7. If you are a light sleeper, I’d strongly recommend sacrificing the view of the Temple of Zeus and booking a room at the back. Actually, if you get a room on the 6th floor, you will have a nice view of the Acropolis and the Filoppappos hill over the rooftops of Athens.
If you don’t mind the noise, go for a room overlooking the Temple of Zeus and Hymettus - -the views are absolutely stupendous, especially at dawn! Also keep in mind that the façade lights up at night so it’s better to keep the blinds shut even though there’re no residential buildings facing the hotel.
Room
Comfortable large bed, excellent bathroom amenities (actually, the posh 5-star Grecotel provided the same), good TV channel selection (not that you will want to watch TV if your room has that view!!). Slippers were provided, but bathrobes were not (maybe you could get one if you asked but I’m not sure).
The room was quite spacious with even some space for the morning exercise.
Loved the understated elegance of the design and the sexy allure that the pictures above the bed conferred to the room.
The famous glass wall between the bathroom and the room actually had blinds on it so privacy was not a concern. Actually, you could take a shower with a view if you liked to!
As noted by other reviewers, the hotel does not provide irons to guests. Moreover, guests are not allowed to use their own irons for safety reasons. I believe the hotel should definitely change that policy as an iron is no more dangerous than a TV assuming guests are sane individuals!
Staff
All of the hotel staff that I spoke to were friendly and helpful and spoke excellent English. I also noticed that some of the staff were multilingual and spoke German and Spanish.
The room was kept immaculately clean; whenever I asked for extra towels or amenities, they promptly arrived.
Meals
One of the few things that need some improvement is the selection of food for breakfast. Fruit was very limited and pastry was always cold. The views from the breakfast room were awesome and partly made up for the Spartan food selection.
Overall, there was definitely some thought put into this hotel and has good development potential if the management keeps up the good job they are doing.
Last but not least do take time to visit the Temple of the Olympian Zeus (covered by the Acropolis ticket) even though you may think you’ve seen it from the room.
The colossal temple is most impressive when you look at it from the ground. The area around the Temple is a chamomile field and the smell makes you feel like you’re in the countryside and not in the center of the city (if you can close your ears to the traffic noise on Syngrou avenue!).
When you’ve seen the main building, turn right after you pass the box office and follow a path that has a “WC” sign. It leads not just to the loo, but also to the remains of some amazing ancient sanctuaries below the main temple.
