The Electra Palace is in Plaka, the heart of "touristy" Athens. There are tons of shops and restaurants within 400 yards of the hotel- it is situated on a very small, curved, one way street (which pretty much describes abou 80% of Athens). No problems with cabs knowing it (but make sure they turn on the meter! We got taken twice!). It is only a short uphill walk to the Acropolis.
The hotel is nicely appointed, but not luxurious. It is comparable to a Marriott in the US- it is definitely NOT on the same standard as the Grand Bretagne (which, by the way, is twice as expensive). All in all, a reasonably good value especially when you throw in the breakfast buffet which was good. The bathrooms are fine with nondesigner bath products and OK towels, combo shower/tub. The water pressure is OK but the water will change temperature a bit during even a brief shower.
However, the number one reason to stay here is the view: absolutely stunning view of the Acropolis during the day and especially at night. Go up to the fourth floor outdoor pool and fifth floor outdoor bar/restaurant and be prepared to be stunned. We heard the view at the GalaxyBar at the Hilton was really great; frankly, it didn't compare with the EP. EP is much closer to the Acropolis. The GalaxyBar is cool, however, it is a little overpriced. (The Grand Bretagne rooftop deck is probably the best of both worlds, a bit farther away from Acropolis than EP, but a fantastic luxurious setting. Very nice.) You must ask for a room with the view at the EP- it is worth the extra money to sit on your patio in the late afternoon and stare at the Acropolis.
Service was OK- I didn't find the front desk folks particularly friendly. They were tersely helpful, however, so I can't complain. Internet access is purchased by getting a card at the front desk- it is wifi but kind of slow. It costs about 5 euros (roughly 7 bucks) for 30 minutes of time- you can break up the time as needed- easy to use.
Two bedrooms places are really two twins pushed together- we had to rearrange a bit of the furniture to have two beds reasonably split apart- the rooms do tend toward the small side, especially for two adult males, unrelated, sharing a room, on a business trip! I would have an entirely different take if this was a pleasure trip with my wife.
There is a school situated behind the hotel. The kids congregate in the schoolyard in the morning- it gets pretty loud. If you've got a courtyard room with acropolis view, it probably won't affect you. If you got a "backside" room, you can be assured that you'll be up at 8 AM sharp.
Summary: great location, great view, reasonably nice hotel. I would definitely recommend it to families and couples who want to experience Athens attractions.
