I can only rave about the excellence of service of the Atheneum Intercontinental. In the last 20 years, I have stayed at least 5 times per year, often in the executive 8th and 9th floors. While the rooms and amenities are very pleasant, it is the service that is striking. Always pleasant and very efficient. Breakfast in the room is generous and never more than 20' to come. In the restaurant , breakfast is an astounding experience and, as for the 8th floor lobby, one gets an excellent short choice in very peaceful surroundings with an unparallelled view of the Acropolis and the sea. Aspecial mention to the wonderful guest relations team.

“Good InterContinental Hotel”

InterContinental Athenaeum

1 Jan 2008
5/5 found this review helpful

I found the Athenaeumto be quite a large and impersonal but overall very good hotel close to the center of Athens.

Rooms are large but lack in style. Very well maintained and with all the facilities you would expect from an InterContinental hotel the rooms were sort of the standard 4 star hotel room that could be in any comparable hotel anywhere in the world. Nothing special or stylish. The bed was quite comfartable though not comparable to what can be found in some other hotels.

There are restaurants and bars at the hotel but given it's good location close to downtown Athens you can easily walk your way to many nice places or just take an easily available cab.

Overall a very good hotel but nothing truly spectacular or special - just solid basics for this type of hotel. One could come back but there is also nothing that would draw me back there.

“A great hotel in a large city...”

InterContinental Athenaeum

20 Dec 2007
4/4 found this review helpful

This is a great hotel - very large though - you really do feel like you're just a room number! It's set within a conference/business centre, so the lobby is very expansive and modern.

My room didn't have much of a view, but was very generously proportioned, and had all the modern features you would expect in a hotel of this class. The corridors are rather dated though, and have a bit of a "The Shining" feel about them. I'm sure other travellers who have stayed here will know what I mean!

The lifts in the hotel are excellent, almost a feature in their own right, with limosuine "night-sky" type lighting and fully computerised operation - you really don't know you're moving!

I didn't really deal with any of the staff or use room service, but everybody I did encounter was friendly and helpful. Check-in was efficient.

The rooftop restaurant and bar was breath-taking - you have amazing views across the city, taking in several of Athens' major landmarks.

The hotel is about a 15-20 minute walk from the nearest underground/tube station. The system is very efficient and it's easy enough to navigate your way around the city.

All in all, highly recommended!

“Modern?”

InterContinental Athenaeum

16 Dec 2007
3/3 found this review helpful

Firstly I will say that I was staying here whilst working in Athens so I can't comment on the cost of the rooms or breakfast as I was lucky enough to have them payed for by somebody else.

I'm intrigued how often peoples' descriptions of this place include the word "modern". It really isn't.
The huge reception area has all the charm and atmosphere of a shopping mall or airport and includes a statue that looks like a KwikFit fitter doing a cartwheel. Despite this the reception staff are friendly and welcoming.
My room was very large, including a sofa, armchair, coffee table and large comfortable bed. All of which looked a little dated - although not as dated as the bathroom! This is supposedly a pretty swanky place and, looking at the prices here, is an expensive one, so you'd expect a serious bathroom. You'd be disappointed though. It looked at least 15 years old, if not 20, and was nothing you wouldn't see in a £70 a night Travelodge.
They may be making some improvements though, as a number of my colleagues had to move rooms to get away from the drilling going on in rooms around them.
You do get tea and coffee making facilities in the room but don't use your 2 teabags too quickly as you wont get any more.
Breakfast was a good, standard hotel chain buffet.

You are only a 20 minute walk from the wonders of the Acropolis, but bare in mind the road which the Intercontinental lies on (and you have to walk up) is a 6 lane raceway for the locals so it wont be a pleasant stroll.

only the best things can be said about this really great hotel.
i stayed there with my wife for a business trip for 3 days and we found out that everything was beyond our expectations.
check-in was quick, friendly and very professional.because we are ambassador members of intercontinental hotels they upgrated us from a standard double to a magnificent dlx room on the 6th floor with beautiful views.the room was one of the largest i have ever stayed in an athens hotel.other hotels might have consider it as a junior suite!
the bathroom was large, mostly marble with nice amenities, magnifying mirror, hair drier, and a very powerful shower.there was no separate shower just the bathtub.plenty of storage space in the room.there was a t.v. set with radio music and pay t.v. a fully stocked mini bar, fast internet connection etc.
a plate full of fresh fruits, candies and a bottle of mineral water was complimentary as well as coffee and tea making facilities.the room apart from the bed and the bedside tables there was a sofa and an armchair as well as a large desk to work.external soundproof was fabulous cause of the double glazed windows.the minor was thatt you could hear some noise from the corridors.the bed was magnicent comfortable and there was a pillow menu which we did not use cause the pillows in the room were more than excellent.room service very polite and extremelly quick.cafe zoe the all day restaurant was superb and there the breakfast was served which was great.lobby cafe-bar ''vienna'' was an excellent choice for coffee and evening drinks.one evening there was live piano music.
it was a fantastic stay overall and can't wait to go back again!
