Athens is a huge city with numerous hotel options. We decided to be in the heart of it all knowing that being on Syntagma Square might carry some baggage with it due to protests and the like. While protests happened along with a loud rock concert on our last evening, I cannot fault the hotel in the least. I can praise the hotel for the quality of service, great location, fabulous breakfast and the quality of the rooms.
As members of LHW, we were upgraded to a marvelous junior suite. The room was five star all the way with a perfect layout that allowed my husband a separate room to do his ‘work stuff’ while I could either spend time in the huge bathroom taking advantage of the separate soaking tub (rain shower too) or the very comfortable bedroom area with large LCD TV. The furnishings were totally of a classic nature with lovely paneling. There was a small semi balcony on the square but frankly, I wasn’t interested in opening the doors due to the overall sound level of Syntagma Square. On most nights (four day stay), the sound level was not an issue other than our last evening during a rock concert and when I can only praise my Boise noise canceling headphones!
I can’t say that the front desk service was outstanding. It was pretty much a standard kind of check in with a very nice bellboy delivering our luggage to the room as he waiting for his tip. No warm and fuzz feelings but typical of a big city hotel.
I was underwhelmed by the room cleaning service on one day when we had an oddly uncomfortable lady that thought I shouldn’t BE in the room while she was doing her job. This can be an issue at any hotel when they don’t understand that sometimes you need to get ‘work’ done for the JOB that is paying you to be there. I do think that this should be addressed in the training of staff. I shouldn’t feel this way and never felt this way the other days we were there.
The breakfast/lunch room was one of the high spots of the visit. Sadly, I don’t know the name of the kind gentleman that sat us at a perfect table every morning as soon as the breakfast room was open. The breakfast choices were near endless and one of the best breakfasts we enjoyed on this ten day trip to a couple of countries. This kind gentleman also went out of his way to make me comfortable for a couple of solo lunches while my husband was off teaching and I was trying to get work done in the room.
Without a doubt even with some minor negative things, I would return to King George Palace. The location was perfect and my hesitation of staying on Syntagma Square was belayed by the quality of the rooms and the quality of some of the staff. The location is perfect and I am very glad that we stayed at the King George Place.
