I stayed in this hotel one night in Sept 2007. Although I liked the hotel well enough, I probably wouldn’t stay here again, but only because of the location.
Positives:
– The hotel is in a pleasant residential neighborhood, with real Greeks going about their everyday business. :-) Quite a contrast to the Syntagma/Plaka area. I took an evening stroll and sat on a bench in the nearby park, watching children playing, people chatting, people hanging out laundry, and so on. It was the only time during my Athens stay that I felt I was in a real neighborhood, and it was most enjoyable.
– The A/C was excellent, nice and cold, just the way I like it.
– The hot water temperature and pressure in the shower were both excellent.
– The beds were firm but comfortable for me.
– The room size was reasonable (I was in a single).
– My room was quiet, with no street noise.
– The staff was helpful and friendly.
– There was a delightful family-owned taverna right by the hotel (just a door or two down on the same side of the street), who served me a wonderful vegetarian meal (not that easy to come by in Greece); one of the family members brought out his two young children to meet the Americans, and they were all charming.
Negatives:
– Although I liked the residential neighborhood this hotel is in, the location is quite some distance from the center of Athens, where all the sights and tourist activities are. (I’m an enthusiastic walker, but I don’t like having to take public transportation or having to walk a long distance to get to city centers when I travel; I prefer to spend that time sightseeing.) For this reason alone, I probably wouldn’t stay here again.
– The breakfast buffet was on the basic side, and both of the baked goods I tried were stale.
– My taxi driver had some difficulty in finding the hotel, both because of the one-way streets in the area and because he said he knew it by an earlier name. You might want to have a little map of the hotel in hand before taking a taxi to it.
Summary:
It’s too bad this hotel isn’t more centrally located, or I would happily stay here again. (Of course, if it were, it wouldn’t be a charming neighborhood hotel.) As it is, I wouldn’t stay here again, but only because of the location. If you don’t mind being away from the center of town, and would like to stay in a residential neighborhood, the Athens Atrium might be just the hotel for you.
