We stayed here four nights in April 2008, and we would stay here again.
Pros:
Location: Only about a five minute walk to the Omonia subway stop and maybe 15-20 to the heart of the plaka. We were definitely willing to trade a 20 min for a hotel that’s half the price of a Plaka hotel. Some people have made a big deal about the neighborhood, but we never had any problems. Yes, there’s a sex show place across the street, but nobody’s handing out anything or yelling at people to come in. If you weren’t paying attention you might not even know it’s there.
Quiet: We never really heard anybody else in the adjoining rooms. Plus since it’s a block off a major street, very low street noise.
Clean: Bathroom was clean and so was the room.
Breakfast: Assortment of breads, yogurt, coffee, juices, cereals. Not the greatest hotel breakfast, but definitely suffices.
Internet. Two computers with half hour time limits. Fast internet.
Friendly front desk staff: We stayed three nights, flew to Cairo, then were staying one night back at the Economy before our flight back to the US the next day. They were able to store our luggage so we didn’t have to drag it to the airport and drag it back to Athens. That was a bonus. Everyone spoke great English and always answered any sightseeing questions we had.
Cons:
Smoke: Our floor (8th) floor was a non smoking floor, but about a third of the time, we could smell the hint of smoke. Don’t know if it was wafting from the floor below.
Hard Bed: The bed was quite firm, but sleepable.
Water Pressure: It could be due to the fact we stayed on the top floor (8th), but we had some varying water pressure while showering. You’d get a minute of water, then 20 seconds of no water. Kind of annoying
A tip, we found ourselves walking down to the Plaka and Monasteraki a lot, and only on the last day did we discover the pedestrian walkwalk that it one block over from the main road, Athinas. I’d recommend that instead of walking down Athinas.
Even with the cons, we would probably stay here again. It’s tough finding a decent hotel for $100 in downtown Athens, but this place delivers as a nice budget hotel.
