It was 1 hr. and 15 minutes to Mythos Palace in Kavros and we arranged for transport for E80 on the internet with Lefteris Kikiforakis. There were lots of taxis available. If we went again and were arriving during the day we would not hesitate to take the public bus. We were delighted with our room, 216, which is sea/pool view. No facecloths and you are not allowed to flush any paper in the toilet. We used the lovely public “water closets” instead of putting the paper in our wastebasket. They had a cold plate set up in the dining room for our late arrival, which was a lovely touch. Very good selection for the breakfast buffet but no nuts, toaster doesn’t work and the juices are nasty. I can't understand why an island that grows such sweet, juicy oranges serves a juice that isn't even as good as packaged Tang. We thought the food quality and selection was excellent. We were very impressed with the temperature of the food on the buffet during all meals and the Bougatsa pie and "egg slices" (French Toast) served at breakfast are not to be missed. Another delight was the creamy Nutella on warm croissants! My mouth is watering just thinking about them. The staff, like most of the residents we encountered in Crete, are certainly not the friendliest but this didn't affect our enjoyment of the property. Although pool lounge chairs were complimentary the pool area was very crowded for the first four days and it was worth the 4 euro for an umbrella and two chairs on the beach. Both the beach and pool areas are very picturesque. The sunrise on Georgioupolis Beach is incredible and the crashing of the waves deafening with so much silence around. The sea is wonderful; clear, warm and, although there are lots of stones, they are smooth so they don’t hurt your feet. About three feet into the sea the bottom is sandy. There is a bus stop within a 5 minute walk and the 40 minute ride into Chania is 4 euro p/p each way. There is a hotel within a 5 minute walk for internet access at a cost of E2.50 for ½ hour. There is a shopping area close to the hotel where we purchased our honey. Took the Cretian Villages tour from 10:15 – 2:10 for E12 each, which was much less than the E30 per hour quoted by our driver. Although we saw lovely scenery there weren’t a lot of photo ops and most of the tour was boring. A visit to a run down taverna, a 17th century Monastery, a pokey silk factory and a visit to Crete’s first olive oil factory which is just ruins. We visited an operating olive oil factory where we were advised not to buy their products, as the 8:30 p.m. tour to Kournas would provide us with the opportunity to purchase the best olive oil and honey available at reasonable prices. The factory tour wasn’t interesting as olive harvest is October – December and nothing was operational. The tour guide was not knowledgeable about anything and there were only 4 English speaking guests on the tour so it was devoted mainly to the Germans. Made the mistake of taking their tour to Kournas for E3 each only to find only two shops open and their prices horrendous. E22 for a small jar of hand cream, E18 for a jar of honey with thyme which was quite strong and E22 for a bottle of olive oil. It took us all of 15 minutes to walk through town and we sat and waited until 10:30 to return to Kavros. A total waste of time and, since it was pitch dark, you couldn’t even say the scenery was nice. Public transit to the airport in Chania cost us E10.40 for 2 as opposed to E40 from the hotel or E4 for the bus to Chania and then E15 for a taxi to the airport. Chania airport was a breeze. We would definitely stay at Mythos Palace if we returned to Crete.

There are several strong plus points for this hotel. The Hotel is very clean, as is the Pool which is non chlorinated and a pleasure to swim in. The staff are very friendly and the location is excellent. Long clean sandy beach which is never crowded even at the height of the season. Georgiopolous is the nearest town - which offers some good restaurants - Valentino's and Sofia's (in the square) amongst them. There are several good bars too. Well located for Hania (a pleasant day out) and not too far (max 1 hour drive from Heraklion. Crete's only major road runs very close to the hotel although when you are in the hotel this is not intrusive.
Bedrooms are clean, air conditioned and serviced daily. Almost everything worked (odd electrical and plumbing glitch).
Do not expect British 5 star accommodation. Service is OK but not what you would expect for 5 star in the UK. Plenty of staff in the evenings and at breakfast but not so good during the day. Food is good for Greece but distinctly average by UK standards. Other reviewers comments about orange juice are spot on as is the warning to AVOID ALL INCLUSIVE. In fact if you could get a B&B deal here it would be the best option.
Children's playground is well placed close to the beach taverna. Better beach Tavernas for lunch etc can be found (we particularly liked the one with the yellow canopies two down the beach to the west - very cheap and food good).
Cocktails in the hotel are not great - the beer is OK and cheap if you stick to the draught. Wines are expensive for what they are and there is very little choice.
I would defintely return to this hotel and to Crete.
For those interested in learning to Scuba dive - friendly and expert introduction offered by Paradise Dive who have a new impressive base just 10 mins to the east. Several Brits on the staff (and one Belgian who spoke better English than most of us!). Paradise visit the hotel once a week touting for custom. Give them a go - we had a great day out with them and one of the instructors girlfriends looked after our children whislt we were diving. Exceptional!

I just stayed for five nights at this hotel, advertised as a 5star, but in Cretan standards. Being used to nice hotels, I imagined a five star hotel to offer me basic standards such as a good breakfast, here the breakfast was tastless, the orange juice was water with sirup ( in a country where orange come cheap), the all-inclusive deal is aweful, when you order a bellini, it comes with water. The room was basic, and you had to keep the window open ( which means no light in the room when closed) to havel light. Bath products were cheap, service was not good at all, there was a lack of staff ( same people at the bar and in the restaurant). The beach was good though, large and clean, as well as the swimming pool, but dont expect anything on this side of Creta, even though the East ( Elounda, Aghios Nikolaos) is much nicer and the St Nicolas Bay hotel really deserves its 5star rating.
