Why Almyrida and its beach hotel? Several reasons but basically we wanted to see friends who live near there, somewhere to chill with a beach, and we got reasonably cheap flights and accommodation (off the net).
Almyrida is a small village beach resort. About three quarters of an hour by car from Chania airport. There is a beach sports school, several bars and restaurants but not a lot else. Beach is mainly nice and sandy but stony in a couple of places. Bus is infrequent but there is a centrally located taxi company. Car is necessary if you want to get out and about.
Almyrida Beach Hotel- this has just doubled in size and is probably the largest and best equipped hotel in the area. The original hotel is along traditional lines but we stayed in the new extension on other side of road/car park. Plain, functional and modernist in style on both the outside and inside but we liked that. Our room was plenty big enough for 2, had balcony, air con, comfortable (twin) beds and decent wet room. Meals were taken in the new block on terrace or inside. We had half board and the food was reasonable in choice, quantity and quality, although we did eat out with friends a lot. Best food was upstairs on the roof where there is a small independent kitchen and restaurant. And it was upstairs we spent a lot of time, in the infinity pool during the day and drinking last thing at night watching the stars shimmering over the sea to one side and mountains to the other. There are two other decent sized pools, the original hotel having one surrounded by palm trees, the second a functional rectangle. At no time did we feel crowded either in the restaurant, at the bars or by the pools. Did I mention there is a ten pin bowling alley in the new extension?
Our only excursions out were to Chania for the day, beautiful harbour area with plenty to see and do, and Kalives, the next beach resort along but bigger than Alymirda with more facilities.
In conclusion we had two complaints, it was possibly too hot while we were there and we did not stay long enough! Had a fantastic time, Almyrida is a lovely little place if your aim is to relax not party. We really enjoyed staying at the hotel and every member of staff was helpful, polite, enthusiastic and basically downright nice.
