Well, this hotel has the makings of something wonderful. The position is great, the entrance through a beautiful courtyard is lovely, the staff are (for the most part!) friendly and helpful. But really it seems to end there.
I went for a long weekend to forget the wettest drought in English history, choosing the Elounda Mare hotel based on other trip-advisor recommendations. You would think I would have learned by now.
The hotel room was perfectly 'nice' lovely but very basic. The room (a twin was booked) had twin beds pushed together - OK a minor issue but with a 5 star hotel, you'd think they'd notice the booking! When the beds were separated I can only say that they most certainly were single. Probably 70 or 80 cm's wide at most, so woe betide anyone who moves in their sleep.
The bathroom - again perfectly 'nice' and clean was falling apart. The bath panels were sticking out/had fallen off, the glass 'shower curtain' was broken and had been sticky-taped together. We even had them come and 'fix' the panel, which meant pushing it back in, only for it to pop back out when they left. The other very odd thing was that half of the towels were hanging in the loo section of the bathroom. Not really a pleasant thought and somewhat of a design flaw.
Free wifi was also one of the reasons we'd booked the hotel - it is one of my bugbears that expensive big group hotels feel it is necessary to charge (in addition to their inflated prices) extra for wifi, when small budget hotels manage to throw it in for free. Nevertheless, free wifi in this hotel actually means, sitting in the lobby area, which is really annoying and not conducive to being able to work - we did speak to another couple, who had managed to get them to put a router in the room but it had taken some discussing and some frustration. It also means (unless you ask for unlimited access) 4 hours of free wifi not continuous. Seems a little petty and pointless to me when they have both ready to go. I should point out that they do have broadband availability in the rooms if you have a laptop but useless for Ipads of course.
The pool is perfectly nice. It's a hotel pool. The beach is small but OK it does the job and there were just about enough loungers by the beach and the 'walkway' seaside to make it work.
Breakfast was good and included, if a little slow on the service side and the Yacht Club food was OK and only that - expensive compared to the same more delicious food available in the local harbour restaurant at Elounda - but it's a hotel.
The staff in the main were nice and helpful - if a little gruff - but it leaves a lot to be desired. There are far nicer hotels in Crete (some more expensive - granted) but I'd rather pay a little extra to get rid of the frustrations and niggles.
All in all I would say, it's a disappointment. It's not the most amazing resort in the world but it's not the worst. But then maybe, as someone said, I've just got far too used to South East Asia, where service is impeccable, rooms are havens to be in with beds that you can actually turn in and resorts actually cater to your needs.
Be careful walking along the corridors if you are in the far part of the main building. The floors...

Thank you very much for your good comments on many aspects about our hotel and your recent stay. Your comments about the bathroom details are well noted and amends will be made. For good order’s sake, our beds are 90cm wide and 200cm long, which is a perfectly adequate size for a single bed. The two beds in each room can be side by side, set apart or made as double with an over-mattress, to fulfill each guest’s requirements.

WiFi: we are in the process of installing it in the whole of the main building. At the moment, routers are always available on request. Our actual policy includes 4 hours free access and free access is provided in the various lounges at the lobby area, where you can always find a very quiet spot.
