My wife and I spent 10 days at the Elounda Bay Palace hotel from 3rd-13th June.
We choose a mountain view room, which on arrival turned out to be very comfortable and clean. This was in the newer block and faced the hills and pool. Stunning location between rugged mountains and turquoise sea.
We found the facilities and service flawless: immaculate pools and beaches, and well-staffed and helpful service. But if you are looking for a very exclusive retreat, the only thing that lets this down is the wide range of clientele. The hotel has a mix of package and non package clientele arriving daily.
We choose the half board option which entitles you to lunch or dinner at the main hotel dining room buffet. The flexibility to switch to the boutique restaurants (for a supplement) was excellent and the food very high quality everywhere. The boutique restaurants were located in lovely spots along the sea front. But they are expensive; about 120-150 Euros for dinner for 2 and half board credit is only about 50 Euros.
We recommend the one day Knossos tour, which also takes you to Preza (wine/olive oil co-operative) and Iraklion. Great fun. Only thing is that two hours are taken up by picking up passengers from dozens of other hotels. Definitely see Plaka, a small village up the coast beyond Elounda. About 45 minutes walk.
Local Buses in Elounda are luxurious, but we never could figure the timetables and waited at least 30 minutes before each journey.
Agis Nikolaous is also worth a visit as very quaint. Would highly recommend visiting ITANOS restaurant for local Cretan food. It's off the central square - opposite Agia Triada main curch. Food is excellent and dinner for 2 put us back only 40 Euros.
Would we go back EBP again - yes definitely.
