Peaceful and welcoming
Stayed in the Cart Lodge with my elderly mother and it made a great base while we visited various local friends, and a nice welcoming place to return to each day and relax after our activities. It was very comfortable and clean, with a modern and very well equipped kitchen. It was also beautifully warm, with both the heating, and the sun streaming in every afternoon, so we didn't end up using the wood-burning stove, but it would be a lovely cosy addition in the winter.
The only slight downside was I found the sofa bed a little uncomfortable, as the bar across the middle dug into hips/thighs. Sleeping diagonally lessened the pressure, but would not really be possible if there were two adults using it. Putting two thick books under the foot of the bed to lift it, so the bar was less pronounced, helped quite a bit (-but a pity I only thought of this in the middle of the last night !)
Anyway, we both really enjoyed our stay and would be happy to visit again, and to recommend it to friends. Jason & Carmel have done a great job in converting the old farm buildings and giving them a new lease of life.

Fabulous pet friendly barn conversion in the English countryside.
My teenage son and I stayed here with our dogs, and so he had the sofa bed which he said was really comfortable. It's great to have all mod cons- full kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine etc which you don't always find.
We loved eating fresh eggs from the chickens every morning, and walking across the fields each day. It's not a residential area, so only a few houses, and the lane very quiet - which was just what I needed as we were staying while searching for houses (after returning to the UK)
The owners are really friendly helpful, and respect your privacy.
Would definitely recommend it for owners will well behaved dogs and who enjoy a rural area - although easy drive to shops.

Peaceful rural retreat
Quiet and comfortable, the Cart Lodge was an ideal base for exploring Essex. Beth Chatto's garden and RHS Hyde Hall are within easy reach and Heybridge Basin is well-worth a visit. Jason has done an amazing job converting the old farm buildings. He and Carmel were very welcoming. Oh, and the eggs from the chickens were much appreciated!

Beautiful Cart Lodge
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this very well equipped and comfortable accommodation,
Carmel was there to meet us and to show us around and explain how everything worked. We were very warm and cosy, which was important as it was just before Christmas when we stayed. The kitchen in the Cart Lodge is very well equipped too which was a big bonus as we ate in quite a lot of the time.

Excellence in Essex
This property was quite stunning. Beautifully appointed and exquisitely finished, this was a lovely rental. It felt more like Provence than Essex with beautiful lavender bushes in the courtyard and washed out blue skies. It was ample for 4 of us and a dog. It was wonderfully quiet and there was room for our 9 month old Labrador to explore safely and for us all to play cricket on the main lawn with visiting grandparents - my dad is still 78 not out, damn him! The local countryside is gorgeous and the people so friendly. We will certainly be coming back.
