“Adequate in a great city”

Radisson SAS Royal Viking Hotel

18 Jul 2007

Just back from a four night stay at the Royal Viking Stockholm.

Fantastic location due to the proximity of the Arlanda Express, the side of the hotel is actually located next to the platform a great benefit as we had to take the 06.35am train to catch our flight home.We were on the Goldpointsplus weekend extended 2 for 2 offer.
After checking in we found our room had twin beds so went back down and told the girl we had asked for a double bed when booked. We were then given a lecture on how you can't specify what type of bed you want so I had to show her the printed out confirmation page of a double bed request made at the time of booking - there really was no need for her to carry on the way she did, anyway she gave us what we wanted or as a Radisson Gold card holder I would have complained to the manager about her manner.I am not the complaining type so you can imagine her attitude must have been bad.All the rest of the staff were professional in their attitude.

Room was adequate size, and always spotlessly clean, bed was big and very comfortable, small bathroom with shower no bath, bathrobes supplied, foldaway ironing board with iron, kettle with coffee and tea, minibar. Located on the 8th floor with a great view over the city temperature control was maintained efficiently.
Breakfast was a bit of a free for all as the dining area is too small for the size of hotel when full and we had to share a table, good choice of food to satisfy everyones taste.
On checking out and looking at the bill I saw we had been charged for the four nights, I explained the extended weekend offer deal we had booked to the girl but she didn't understand and eventually a young man found out that such a rate existed and apologised before amending the bill. No time for breakfast so we took advantage of the free "grab a breakfast and run" facility in the lobby (basically coffee and croissant) which is handy for taking on the train.

All the main attractions are within walking distance of the hotel if you are fit and I would not bother with the city bus tour it is really a waste of money. Spend the money saved on a ferry ride to Vaxholm - a great day out.

PS. As a Radisson Gold card holder I did not receive any extra benefits which was a pity as other hotel chains treat their loyal customers far better than Radisson.

“Great location”

This hotel could not be better placed, right in the middle of Stockholm, overlooking main streets and just minutes away from the Central Station. I stayed there for three days in June to see the sights of Stockholm, so the location was ideal and my room was big (it's worth upgrading). The breakfasts were excellent, and the Fisk restaurant (in the hotel) good. These are not cheap, but there are many places to eat nearby (including MacDonalds!) if money is important. Check-in and -out were easy.
There were a few problems - using the Internet in the hotel is expensive (use the one in the rail station, or bring your laptop), the TV did not show the bill, and the room card did not always operate in the lift. But the air-conditioning in the room was great - and needed, because it hit 30C+ outside while I was there.
Overall, a fine experience, and I'd recommend it.

We stayed at this hotel from May 29/07 - June 3/07. This hotel mainly caters to business travellers and for this reason their rates are extremely high during the week and reasonable on the weekend. We had a party of three, 2 adults and 1 10 month old. We had a few bumpy starts with this hotel but in the end we were happy with our selection due to it's location. This hotel is 10 steps away from central station and a couple blocks away from the main shopping district. If you're wanting location, you can't get any better. When we first checked in we were given the smallest room I have ever been in. Our crib barely fit. We were extremely dissapointed that we paid 3000SEK a night for a room so small that we couldn't even move in. After talking with the service manager we were given a family room which was very spacious. The frist two cribs we were given were broken. The icing on the cake is that this hotel is going through renovations. This is not noted anywhere on their website!!! The noise goes from 10:00 - 16:00. This is the loudest construction I've ever heard. We complained and were given a free night. I must say that the staff were great at fixing the problems but it's unfortunate that the problems were there to begin with. The pool is small and you have to pay extra for it but most days we just got off the elevator in our robes and walked right in and they didnt make us pay. The breakfast buffet was okay but once again it was extra. There weren't really many other options for breakfast in the near vicinity. Children not recommended for this hotel. Also, the restaurant in the lobby of the hotel is a fish house so the lobby occasionally smelled like fish.

“Unimpressed with the Royal Viking”

Radisson SAS Royal Viking Hotel

24 May 2007

We were expecting more from the Royal Viking based on the reviews we saw on TripAdvisor and based on our prior stays at Radisson SAS hotels. We were unfortunately disappointed by this hotel. The staff are "hit and miss" with regard to helpfulness and/or friendliness. Our junior suite was very small and the price very large. We ended up moving to a larger suite (and paying even more) because the aircon in our junior suite wasn't working properly. Our larger suite had an unpleasant odor, although the aircon worked this time. The breakfast buffet was standard fare -- nothing special -- but typical for Radissons. On the plus side, we were across the street from Central Station and since we came into Stockholm by train, that was very convenient. We have found Radisson SAS hotels (after staying in 4 different ones on this trip) to be somewhat inconsistent. But there is free internet in all their hotels and that's important if you are travelling with two teenagers and 3 laptops like we are!

This hotel is excellently located by the train station, so very handy if you're coming in from the airport by Arlanda Express....a 2 minute walk.

The room was nice - despite requesting a queen room I got 2 single beds, but comfortable enough. Bathroom was large and modern.

I was late in most nights so stuck with room service, as everything nearby (except McDonalds) seemed to close very early. If you don't like herring, prawns or salmon (and I don't much) then you are limited to meatballs and a cheeseburger as your room service choices!! An extremely ordinary menu. Thank heavens for the huge breakfast selection.
