Having had trouble making a reservation for this very busy time of the year in Stockholm, a friend (also a Stockholm native!), recommended the Diplomat Hotel, mainly for the location. We stayed here 4 nights prior to embarking on a cruise.
Due to delayed plane schedules, we arrived around 11:00 p.m.
The small reception just inside the entrance was confusing, as it is located in the restaurant...almost. The staff was very nice, and offered to bring our 4 large suitcases up to our 4th floor room. A feat in itself, given that 3 people in the very small elevator was a crowd! Quite charming with the two decorative gates, which had to be closed to operate...but VERY SMALL!
We knew our room for the first night would be quite small, but this one was about the size of my walk-in closet at home, with a bath tacked on! However, given the hour and long day of flying, we thought the bed looked wonderful! And, it was quite comfortable. As other reviewers have stated, there is NO air conditioning! Upon opening the window to get air and cool the room, we found that we were in an alley, and construction scaffolding was attached to the building. Hopefully, we would not have company in the morning outside the open window!
The noise the next morning was horrendous! Lots of banging and construction noise! (No workers looking into our room though!) We had been told that we would be moved to a larger room for the remainder of our stay, which was to be the case. A beautiful corner room with a great view of the waterway and other islands...along with the unbelieveable traffic NOISE coming from the busy street below! Since open windows were a requirement for comfort, and we did have a great cross-breeze, we worried about the noise level at night. However, the nights were very quiet. Large, comfortable bed, with sitting area with sofa and two large easy chairs, nice t.v., desk, plus very tiny table and chairs next to window overlooking the lovely view. Also, very nice bath, with large tub and separate shower. All this for about $700.!!! per night! Not quite worth that, but it was a lovely room.
Nice restaurant with very good food. We had room service for all the breakfasts, which were very reasonably priced. Did not use the buffet, however, we were automatically billed for it! Make sure that breakfast is not included in your room charge.
Another caution, be very careful in walking around your room, especially at night, There are one or two steps everywhere!! My friend, in another room, fell twice when she neglected to remember they were there!
This is a wonderful hotel for location...walking distance to almost every sight. Not a great value, however.
