I have stayed at the Grand at numerous occasions. I
stay at the Grand whenever I visit Stockholm. But
recently I have noticed a change, a change towards the
less pleasant side of the scale. I feel that the hotel
have become more and more mainstream, more and more
package tourists there and less attentive service and
arrogant/snobbish staff. This is not acceptable at the
city's premier hotel.
I have always received complimentary upgrades, and did
so this time as well. Personally I like the design of
the rooms and bathrooms - they are large, comfortable
and functionally designed. It is certainly not Four
Seasons style, but it works for me. Maybe I have been
lucky with the rooms I have been assigned earlier.
Anyways, I found the room very comfortable. BUT the
lcd-tv was SMALLISH!!! It was impossible to watch tv
from bed, cause the 20" tv was placed at the desk, so
from the bed I would need a telescope to see anything.
Dissappointing, when they refurbished they shouldn't
allowed small televisions. They should be 32" - at
least. There was something wrong with the AC/heater
also. The room was too hot. I called down to the
reception, and they said they would fix it
immediately. But nothing happened. I called down to
remind them, but nothing happened. I called a third
and fourth time, but nothing happened. I gave up on
this in the end. I was too tired to fight with the
operator. But this is very unacceptable.
Like previous visitors have mentioned - it's almost
impossible to enter the bar without a reservation. The
bar is so popular with the locals, which is good to a
certain point, but too bad they can't accomodate the
in-house guests - or at least give preference to them.
All I met on two occasions was an arrogant attitude a
la: "We are the city's busiest bar, try again another
time". Anyways, I finally got a table the next day (in
early evening, LOL) - and the bar is really, really
nice. I loved the atmosphere and the drinks (extremely
pricey though). The food was also nice (lobster
sandwich). So I would recommend you to make a
reservation at the bar in advance (even if you are
staying at the hotel), if not you would probably have
to stand while enjoying your drink, or go elsewhere. I
also like the food at the Verandan, and the view is
fantastic (just like from the bar). I didn't try their
new restaurant Mathias Dahlgren (which is named after
it's star chef), but will absolutely do so next time I
am around.
The breakfast (included) was fabulous as usual (my
all-time-fav hotel breakfast). There is complimentary
wireless internet throughout the hotel, which is also
a nice feature. They also joined InterContinental
recently, but I didn't notice any difference regarding
this - except the mainstream feeling and the decreased
level of service. One good thing though - earning
points with Priority Club.
I would recommend the Grand Hotel and it's staff to
lower down their attitude a little bit, and start to
pay more attention to their in-house guests. I feel
that they are loosing the grip, but I hope I am wrong.
Any hotel that are resting on it's laurels will lose
in the end. I would rate this hotel 5 points if they
were up to par with recent visits, but I will give
them 4 points this time, due to lack in the level of
service. I hope it is 5 points next time I will
return. It's still Stockholm's premier hotel, and THE
classy luxury hotel in town.
