I would echo the concerns voiced below regarding the noise level at this hotel. Unless you are a heavy sleeper, ask for a room facing the courtyard rather than the street and you will be much happier. We spent two semi-sleepless nights despite the fact that the Helsinki Club, which occupies the same building, was not in operation.
Local post-bar tradition apparently requires one to scream at the top of ones lungs on your way home and there will likely be drunks doing just that outside your window on any day of the week owing to the number of clubs and bars in the area. Consider also asking for a room on the 8th floor. After moving to the courtyard side, we were unlucky enough to be roomed directly below two rambunctious and apparently insomniac children engaged in a 4AM track meet. Why this did not disturb their parents was a mystery. A third move to the 8th floor produced absolute peace and quiet.
With those caveats, I would recommend this hotel. The staff (particularly Heli and Satu) were great, the breakfast buffet is fabulous and the location is excellent – two blocks from the train station and a five minute walk to the harbor Kauppatori or the Esplanadi. It is also a block from Fazer, whose ice cream sundaes should not be missed and whose cappucino is otherworldly. Also, for cheap and excellent food visit the tents at the Kauppatori - the salmon and reindeer sausage are out of this world and CHEAP.
Should you find yourself with two extra days in Finland, consider a cruise to Stockholm. We decided that this would be a cost effective way to gain accommodations for two days while allowing us to see yet a third county. Because they make so much money from duty free shopping on board (which, barring the currently weak dollar, would be pretty good for Americans too) the fares are dirt cheap. Try 85 Euro for a two day cruise as opposed to $200 per night in a Helsinki hotel and it was simple math. You leave Helsinki at 5:30 and enjoy about 7 hours in Stockholm before departing at 4:45 the following day. On Fridays these ships (we were on Viking) are pretty crazy but our midweek cruise was pretty sedate. If you like it quiet, get the C class cabins which are far from the action and, while the smallest, are great for two people and include all the amenities you would get in a hotel (shower, towels soap). Absolutely the best 85 Euro we ever spent. Highly recommended. Incidentally, the beer selection in the pub on board is impressive and competitive with prices in the US.
