I booked the Golden Circle on Iceland Horizon for my second day of my trip in Iceland with my fiancee due to the hype and rave reviews it has received on TripAdvisor, and gladly the trip did not disappoint one bit. We were lucky to have our tour with David. A knowledgeable and friendly tour guide, we had several extended conversations with him about Iceland, about our hometown (New York City), about his move from Britain to Iceland several years ago, to everything in between. He was so open to answer questions, and his love for Iceland was palpable.
David picked us up near our hotel in a small van. By the time we picked up all the other passengers, we were 7 strong, ready to go. Our first stop was at a delicious bakery in Hveragerði, about a 30 minute ride outside town. We then stopped at the Kerið crater for about 15 minutes, and a waterfall whose name I forgot for 15 minutes. Before our next stop, Gullfoss, David was kind enough to pull over to the side of the road to let us spend some time petting and feeding some Icelandic horses, since we took an interest in them.
At Gullfoss, a large waterfall, we had an hourlong stop. We had another hourlong stop at Geysir, and a 45-minute stop at his favorite, Þingvellir National Park. All of the stops were beautiful. He was available to provide information about each stop, but also gave us the option of going off and exploring these areas on our own, as long as we met at the meeting point on time.
One of my favorite elements of the trip was that he brought his son along, with a friend. His son, aged 7, was a welcome addition to the trip. David told us a lot about Iceland from his son's perspective; parenting differences, naming conventions, schooling, etc. It gave us a really great view of the country.
I couldn't recommend the Golden Circle tour more highly, for those at any age. It was a great way to begin our trip, and even though or other tours were intentionally more active (hiking and horseback riding), this was a great way to start our Icelandic adventure!
