I stayed in the Hotel Borg for a few nights in Oct 2007. The staff at the Borg were very friendly and helpful and, thankfully, spoke superb English. I won’t add anything further about the lovely Art Deco look of the Borg, as other reviews have that angle well covered.
However, having read some of the reviews, I suspect that I was just unlucky and got an iffy room. I was in a single room at the rear of the hotel. The room itself was okay: bright, modern and well-appointed. Likewise, the bathroom was perfectly adequate. However, in a couple of areas the room was very disappointing: firstly, the windows were surely part of the original (1930s) fixtures and fittings: rotten, ill-fitting wooden frame, certainly not draft-proof, and nigh impossible to close.
Also, the heating control was – well – out of control. I think this was in large part down to the under-floor heating in the bathroom; which meant the whole room was like an oven 24/7.
The breakfast in the ground floor ‘Silfur’ restaurant was absolutely first rate: a great selection of quality foods including a wide range of breads, cereals and cooked breakfast staples (bacon, scrambled eggs, etc.).
One thing I would stress about Iceland is the cost: I had heard it was expensive, but NOTHING can prepare you for the hit your wallet takes: eating out for example, is eye-wateringly expensive: £25 for a burger with chips and a bottle of beer; £5 for a small hot chocolate in a downtown café; £17 for a ‘cheap’ trashy paperback. I could go on. Overall, this tempered my enjoyment of Iceland somewhat. I felt quite resentful that I wasn’t really able to enjoy all that Iceland had to offer without spending a huge amount of money.
Go to the Blue Lagoon and Gulfoss – both well worth the trip. Also, Pingvellir is interesting too.
Top tip: hire a car rather than pay over the odds for the coach tours. I paid £110 for 3 days hire (through SIXT) – a bargain at Icelandic prices!
Overall though, sorry to say that I wouldn’t hurry back to Iceland.
