Beaufort castle was built in the eleventh century as a square fortress, protected by a ditch and an enclosure. In the first half of the twelfth century the castle was flanked by a keep (now gone) and the entrance was moved and enlarged.
In 1348 the castle became property of the House of Orley. The lords of Orley enlarged its eastside considerably. In the sixteenth century their descendant, Bernard de Velbrück ordered the construction of an artillery tower and a renaissance wing with large windows.
In 1639 the castle was bought by Jean Baron de Beck, Spanish governor of Luxemburg. He had a new residence built next to the old castle, which was abandoned henceforth and fell to ruins.
The audioguided tour of the castle starts in the lower court. After a visit to the artillery tower you move to the entrance section of the main edifice. Here you can see the room of the guards and a well. Via the kitchen (nothing left to see) you enter the upper court.
Only outer walls and some cellars remain of the former chapel, lodgings, knights hall and renaissance wing. A flight of stairs leads to the upper floor of a slim tower, offering a general overview of the ruins.
When visiting a castle my goal is to get a good idea of its architectural evolution and its layout and I want to learn more about its history and the lives of its occupants.
Beaufort castle failed to fulfill abovementioned expectations.
Only a minor part of the audioguide is dedicated to the history of the castle and its architectural evolution. Moreover, the few images on display do not allow a good understanding.
The living quarters of the castle are so ruinous that you can no longer distinguish the different rooms. Furthermore, the stops of the audioguide were indicated so poorly or even incorrectly that I got quite frustrated.
You learn nothing about the lives of the occupants of the castle.
Most part of the audioguide provides information about general aspects of medieval life : food and drinks, hygiene, use of firearms, heating and lighting etcetera.
