I walked into the Hotel Francais, unannounced, to see if there was room for a night. It caught my eye from the center of the Place d'Annes, above the Cafe Francais. Neat and trim, with views overlooking the bandstand and cafe's, it seemed like the perfect spot. The desk clerk offered a room at the back, or one at the front for 10 euro more. Reasonable either way, I opted for the view.*
The ground floor holds a restaurant, both inside and out, elevator access to the upper floors, and a winding spiral staircase. Parking is in the nearby Central lot:, two short blocks away (you can't access the hotel except by foot or taxi). The desk clerk was friendly and his English was excellent.*
The room is comfotable, clean, and modern: two single beds with matching duvets, a small plasma TV with exclusively French channels (plus CNN), a safe and desk (no minibar). The hotel advertises free WiFi (as is available throughout the city streets), but I didn't try it. There was complementary bottled water, but no minibar. Windows opened over the square, and had heavy curtains which could be drawn to restrict noise and light (although the square quiets down by 11 and stays quiet except for garbage collection). The bathroom is adequate: a hand shower stall with hot, although weak, water and a small selection of toiletries.*
Breakfast is included, and includes a buffet of breads, a meat and cheese plate, juice, and cereal. The pain chocolat was good comfort; a pot of coffee and warm milk, sufficient for three big cups, was quickly provided. The outdoor tables are a relaxed and sunny spot for watching the city wake up,*
This is a friendly and well appointed travelers inn at the center of Luxembourg City, reasonably priced and well located. Definately worth considering!*
