A great hotel on the main plaza in Luxembourg City. Large, clean rooms with big bathrooms. An elevator to deal with the 5+ floors! This hotel offers a good value.

We "fell for" this hotel based on the reviews we read here. Yes, the LOCATION IS GREAT (as long as you don't try to get there by car, there is NO access!), but otherwise it is a rather average place. The receptionist seemed to be working elsewhere so the service at check-in was mediocre, the room was small, the bath room just essential. Breakfast was average, "service" - again - rather coarse. The local hotel brochures describe the hotel as 3-Star, which is probably right, it is defenitely NOT #1.

I checked into the Hotel Francais for three nights in July 2006 after abandoning the awful hotel at which I had a reservation. The location is absolutely perfect, right on the main square. The staff were very kind and helpful, as well. I requested a single but instead got a studio apartment just a few doors down the street at the same price. It was wonderful to have a refrigerator, computer desk, dining table and etc. for only about 100 euros.

My only complaint was the breakfast buffet, which was free but a little bit lacking.

My baby daughter and I were in Luxembourg for a weekend, following a business meeting on Friday.

We enjoyed both the city and the Hotel Francais, which put us up in their "annex" on the charming Place Guilliame II, just a two minute walk from the main hotel on Place des Armes. Annex Room 3 was new, clean and baby-proofed, with low beds and huge windows that opened from the top.

The reception staff was helpful, suggesting restaurants and a beautiful playground about a ten minute walk away.

One caveat: although our room had a refrigerator and stove, we could find no place in walking distance to buy anything but expensive cheeses. There was no supermarket or "mini-market", and after 6 even the newsagents were closed. Although cafés are open late, tourists with cars may want to stock up BEFORE they get downtown.
