“Catering for the masses”

We booked first two weeks in October - a sea-view room in the main hotel. Best rooms are even numbers overlooking hotel terrace and sea. Odd numbers overlook the pool. We upgraded 2nd week to a suite at a cost of £250 but it was worth it - superb room and views. Avoid the villas if possible - cheaper, but dark inside and a little remote from the hotel.
The standard rooms are nothing special but are kept clean.
The hotel has a large lobby with bar, TV and a section with 'arcade' type machines, plus two pool tables. The outside terracing is very pleasant. The pool is excellent - plenty of room and OK for non swimmers. The beach also good - plenty of sunbeds. Sea inviting and warm but does get a bit choppy at times. Lifeguard in attendence.

The restaurant overlooking the sea was closed so we confined to the basement. Seating arranged in formal rows - forget having an intimate meal! The food is definitely 'catering for the masses' - buffet style breakfast and dinner. The plates were rarely warm. The food was somewhat 'continental' - fried eggs were available for breakfast but everything else was very spicy. There was a large selection of cold meats and cheeses. A glass of fresh orange juice was charged at approx. £2! The toaster was useless. A reasonable selection for dinner, usually beef, veal or chicken dishes. Sometimes fish was available but very dry and uninteresting. Vegetables when available were overcooked. The kitchen staff tried very hard to keep the food topped up. A local wine was available at approx. £8 but was poor - you had to spend a bit more to get something half reasonable.
Here's a tip - remember to guard your plates!! The staff are incredibly 'efficient' and collect the plates with gusto. If you leave the table your plate will be collected, regardless of whether you have finished or not! My wife and I took it in turns to visit the buffet.

There are two eating places outside by the pool and the beach. These serve 'fast food' - pizzas, chicken, kebabs etc. - self service

There is no where to get a decent cup of tea or coffee - you are served with a small cup of hot water and either a teabag or a sachet of coffee.

English was spoken but very poor in many areas. The best english was spoken at reception. Friendliness was 'mixed' , overall not very warm.

A bus service is available through the day to Kyrenia - takes about 15 minutes. Taxi cost about £6. We walked it one day - it took over two hours and the lack of a proper pavement made it very dangerous!
There are some excellent restaurants around the harbour with a good choice of fresh fish. We took two meals there - I wish we were B&B, we would have taken all our meals there.

Summary - definitely not 5 star. Food average (some guests rated it as poor). In truth, I suffered from indigestion most of the time. Service reasonable but not over friendly. Rooms clean. Ideal for beach holiday but I wouldn't want to be there at the height of the season. The hotel is a bit isolated. My wife and I like to go for walks but this was not possible.

Would I go again? Very unlikely!!

We have stopped 4 times at the Club Acapulco and enjoyed every visit.
We prefer the hotel to the bungalows.
The staff are courteous and helpful.
The beach is great and the pool well looked after.
The food is very good however the drinks are a bit pricey.

Rooms in hotel main building excellent - clean, spacious and good facilities.
Pool, grass area and beach - very good, kept clean and best in the area.
Restaurant - food mediocre at best, unidentified food in the evening with no labels and can be a bit of a bun fight - not a relaxing experience. Waiters do not serve you they only clear away - sometimes a bit too enthusiastically.Although not applicable to us it could be a problem for somebody with walking difficulties as much of the site is either up a hill or steps which is not mentioned in the brochure.
Weekends can be very busy and packed as non residents are allowed to visit the beach etc. for a small charge payable at the gate.
The cost of soft drinks was another source of complaints - £2.50- £3.00 for a can and they inspect your mini-bar each day and if they find drinks in there that do not belong they confiscate them!
There is a casino on site and this operates 24 hours a day for those who want it but it means that people are arriving and leaving it 24 hours a day.
Parking facilities (if you hire a car) can be limited (cars parked on pavements and the likes) especially at the weekend.
Room allocation on arrival a bit hit and miss - many people put in "wrong" rooms for a day or so until theirs were ready especially the bungalows.
We were at the Acapulco from 11 to 25-08-2005
