I have just returned from a really great trip to Paphos, Cyprus. We stayed at the Queens Bay Hotel, This is my impression:
Firstly, I had read a few reviews on this site and so contacted the hotel myself via the internet. All replies were prompt and very courteous, so as they say, first impressions are lasting ones!
My wife and I departed from Cork on 8/05/08 via Heathrow (Which I would rather exclude from this i.e. no comment), arriving at Paphos airport at 22h10, we caught a Taxi from the airport to the hotel. It was a limo so we thought we traveled in style, well, never mind the style, the driver must have thought we were desperate to get there, he drove like a maniac and in had sussed us out as easy pickings. The pleasure of the trip or should I say terror of the trip cost us 45.00 Euros, but we were on holiday what the hell??
The Hotel staff from the outset were very courteous and pleasant, the room was very clean and with the balcony we had fantastic views of the sea, overlooking the pool area. Very nice!
On our first day, we were still a bit jet lagged and as this was our first break in quite a while, we spent the day relaxing at the hotel, then went into town (Paphos) to the Market area and ended up hiring a car (Taxi's too dicey in my opinion). The chap we dealt with was very entertaining and seated at a table outside, we concluded the deal, only having to produce my EU license and assurances that I could drive an Auto. No problems.
Our Second day consisted of a drive up the coast taking in the local sites and included a visit to the Birds and Animals Park. In my opinion this park is way overpriced and not good value for money, but then perhaps I have been spoiled by the Foto Wildlife park, here in Cork. The sites which included a protected fishing bay, a archaeological site and Aprodite's pool and walk, was very interesting. The only charge was for the archaeological stie at 1.71 Euros each, not bad and quite interesting. Lovely views of the sea. I found the fauna and flora on the walk to Aprodite's pool most interesting and clearly marked out. During our drive up here, we encountered some very friendly swallows, that followed us swooping alongside us for some distance, interesting. The drive back was along mountainous roads and plenty of vineyards, very interesting and pleasant.
Without going on and on about the trip, in all it was very interesting. Now for the Hotel:
Staff were very courteous, the room was very clean and we found in general although the staff place was immaculate, the staff were very un-obtrusive. The meals at the hotel were all buffet style, and fresh, my wife and I both being taken by the divine Yogurt. Entertainment was arranged throughout the days and some of the evenings. The rates were very reasonable from what I was able to tell. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wishing a quite stay, with good service. Highly recommended that one hires a car for general getting around without a fuss.
