“Warning not all is as it seems”

Hotel Riu Cypria Bay

14 Jul 2008

After finally getting to the hotel nearly a day late due to good old Easy Jet cancelling our flight we arrived at what we thought was our hotel the Riu Cpria Bay only to find after we we filled out our details on one of their forms that they had actually given us rooms in their so called sister hotel next door, Cypria Maris !! we then followed a porter next door through a run down unused part of that hotel to Cyria Maris reception, straight away we noticed how dark and dingy our surroundings were, we were offfered rooms that were not together and we pointed out that as I was to occupy a room alone we had asked when booking for a room that was next to each other, they then offered us a " bungalow" as they called it !! which when viewed looked like a cell in the grounds, we refused that offer and were taken to view rooms upstairs !!, it got worse as we went along the stained cream carpets !! rooms were not of a standard we were expecting to say the least, back down stairs again to air my views to the recepition staff !! I pointed out that to my knowledge I had booked rooms in the Cypria Bay Hotel and that the pictures on the website where I had booked showed pictures of that hotel !! and that that is where I expected to stay, they had initailly told us that that hotel was full !! after a bit of ranting from me they backed down and proceeded to take us back to Cyria Bay Hotel next door, once it was all sorted their and we we taken to our rooms I have to say all was well and we were in the surrounding we were expecting.
Staff in this Hotel were very helpful and nice, food was average but not as good as other 4 Star hotels we have stayed in,before Pools were lovely, Hotel was clean. Be warned if your looking for a nice bath at the end of the day they have taken away all the plugs because of a water shortage.
After returning from our trip I have checked out the photo's shown of the hotel and found they do include a couple of pics of Cypria Maris but most are of Cyria Bay which is by far the more modern and superior surroundings, it's up to you if you are happy to accept the poorer quality of Cyria Maris or you could complain as I did and stay where you expected to stay !!
Within walking distance was a great water park, Go Karting and Mini Golf all well worth a visit.
Average place to go could be better, we have uploaded some pictured showing Cyria Bay and Cypri Maris to show the difference in surroundings.

My partner and I stayed in the Cypria Maris wing of the Riu Cypria Bay Hotel from 2nd to 9th July 2008. We are in our fourties and preferred the Maris to the Bay as it was more traditional and quiter. I would agree that the pool at the Bay is superior to that at the Maris but all the facilities of the Maris and Bay are shared so there is no need to miss out on anything.

The food was varied and of an excellent standard . All the staff were efficient and friendly. The restaurant staff, (and in particular the head waitress), shone above all.

The rooms were cleaned to a high standard. We had one which was sea facing and it gave us a lovely view of the sunset each evening.

The only reason I haven't given the Maris 10 out of 10 is because the air conditioning in the reception, restaurant and games room needs to be improved and the lighting in the games room is too dim.

My boyfriend and I are in our late twenties and stayed at the Riu Cypria Bay in Paphos in June. We specifically booked 'The Riu Cypria BAY Hotel' with our travel agent as opposed to 'The Riu Cypria MARIS Hotel', as it looked much better and the price reflected this.
Before going on our holiday, we read reviews on TripAdvisor that warned us that the BAY hotel may try to put you in the MARIS hotel (next door) instead. On arrival, this is exactly what happened!! We were told that as of January 2008, both the BAY and the MARIS had become one resort under Riu, with the bay wing and the maris wing. On hearing this we went over to the Maris....It was disgusting. Huge stains all over the carpets in public areas, no air conditioning in these areas, the bar was hot and dingy, the room was tiny and tacky etc...
After much hassle and contact with travel agents and representatives, we were lucky. Due to the fact that our accomodation receipt specifically stated THE BAY HOTEL rather than resort, we were finally allowed back over to the Bay after one nights stay in the Maris.
The Bay on the other hand was lovely, leagues above the Maris (which should be rated 3* CERTAINLY not 4*). The rooms are much bigger and spacious, large blaconies, clean etc.
During our stay, we were made aware that many other guests were being re-located over to the Maris and we thought this was appauling! It is a complete scam, it is obvious that the Bay is doing well and the Maris is not, so they are shifting people over there to make more space for high paying customers! YOU MUST STAND YOUR GROUND! When we were being told we were to stay in the Maris, even our taxi driver was making gestures over the receptionists shoulder telling us not to accept it!!! BEWARE!
Apart from the awful welcome and the complete lack of information given to us when we finally checked into the Bay....we had a lovely stay, the room was lovely, very clean, the pool was great, the food was outstanding, by far the best quality of the hotel! However, though there were plenty of sun beds, they were all gone (towels on them) by 6am!!! Though as we left, signs were going up everywhere alerting guests that this is not allowed.
Unfortunately another down side was the entertainment at night, when it is held outside by the pool bar it is lovely, sitting out at night with a cocktail....however, this only happen on 3 of our 10 nights, the rest was held in the indoor nightclub....why would you want to sit inside on your holiday??! It was very poor, an effort was made but still very poor result.
Many many weddings, therefore, lots of families and lots and lots of older couples...I do not recommend Paphos to young couples, it does not cater for it, either a bar scene or a quiet scene, few nice restaurants, no romantic areas and the harbour has nothing to offer, however, Coral Bay beach is beautiful.
All in all, apart from the check in miss hap and the poor entertainment, the hotel is indeed a 4* and deserves that rating - the food helps this a great deal! Just make sure you stay at the Bay and not the Maris!!!

“Great wedding hotel x”

Hotel Riu Cypria Bay

2 Jul 2008

I have recently returned from the Riu Cypria Bay Hotel in Paphos where i got married. It was the best day of our lives and the staff of the hotel could not have been any better. Any worries or problems we had we went straight to them and they sorted them for us. I would definatley recommend this hotel as a wedding venue as the views are amazing, and the photos are even better. Our photographer was from fotokinsi and our photos were great.

The food was great, i am vegan and i had lots of choice, from fresh salad, pasta, chips, etc. My husband had fish, chicken, pork etc and also said it was very nice.

The cleanliness of this hotel has to be mentioned, everyday for 2 weeks we saw cleaners cleaning rooms, reception area, stairs, banisters etc etc, and left a different fancy towel arrangement in our room every day! including a loveheart with 2 swans and a love poem the day before our wedding!

I wouldn't recommend this hotel for groups of young people as it is more family and wedding orientated than a clubbing hotel!

The entertainment at night was good, esp the parrot show as my 2 year old had so much fun! there is also a mini disco everynight at 8.45 which is great for the kids.

The pool is great, we have been abroad numerous times and we have to say that this was def the best pool we have had!

Def worth a visit!! x

I am a frequent traveller and have many years experience of various locations and accomodation. I booked this holiday with Thomson. Having booked the Cypria bay we were surprised to be checked into the Cypria Maris which is next door, other guests were treated similarly. They now call the two hotels the Cypria Resort so they feel it's OK to do this. Anyway, it wasn't a problem as I thought the 'Maris' was quiter and had more charm and character than the 'Bay' which had many pre-school age kids and during the day the animation team and the loud music were annoying. The food in the Maris was well prepared but the choice was just average and repetitive, a bit boring really. The evening entertainment was amateur, but seemed to be enjoyed by the Germans and Belgians who were in the majority by a huge margin. The hotel is clean, the staff are great and the local beer (Keo) is quite drinkable although the spirits are very weak. A warning to anyone considering getting married here, Dont!! In the week we were there many weddings took place but the facilities are very poor and I felt quite sorry for those taking part, there was nothing special about the exposed gazebo in front of the pools. This hotel is priced as 4 star but in reality should be 3 star, so it's overpriced. For this reason only it doesn't offer good value for money. A bit of a let down really considering it is a Riu hotel.
