We are just back from the Hermitage Hotel and still on a high. The hotel well deserves the 5 star grading. It is quite slick and modern but with very comfy touches etc…..The entrance and entire length of the ground floor (including bar and lounge areas) have cathedral ceilings with wooden beams, modern chandeliers and it is and feels very spacious. The chairs are mostly in cosy leathers, including some chesterfield couches and oversize arm chairs with very luxurious cushions in silks and velvet just the perfect place to have a quiet drink after a long day on the slopes/ after dinner. On the tables are lots of coffee tables books both in Spanish and English that make for very interesting and entertaining read. There is a fireplace at the end of the lounge but it was never in use during our stay, which was a pity.
The staff members were all very professional and efficient……The staff on receptions were always very helpful and knowledgeable, so much so, that they offered to sent the porter to the chemist in the middle of an incredible blizzard, when I took ill one evening. They truly seemed happy to assist guests in any way they could to make their stay really special.
The hotel is built down the mountain face so when you arrive at reception from the road at ground level, you are really on the 5th floor. The rooms then are built down the mountain so, you are going down to your room instead of up….. room numbers than rage in the 100’s are on the fifth floor, 200 on the fourth, 300 on the third and so on. It was a bit confusing the first couple of times but you get the hang of it very quickly and there is a note on the lifts as in which floor the rooms are situated.
The rooms are very spacious and very well appointed, but a tad dark as someone mentioned before. Still the bed was so luxurious and those pillows!......still thinking about them. The rooms have a sitting area with flat screen tv. Satellite tv channel are in all major languages (Spanish, English, French, and German) as well as local Catalan and even a channel in Polish/Russian. All the rooms face the impressive Grandvalira which has beautiful views of the mountain/slopes. We had a huge balcony and it snowed quite heavily for 5 days but the under floor heating kept the snow quite low to the ground compare to next door (there was no one staying and the snow was almost to the veranda by day 4!)
The bathroom is very well appointed with toiletries that were replaced every day, from toothbrushes to cotton wood. It is tiled with polished and tumbled marbled and has an audio feed from the TV so if you are in the bathroom, still can listen to the news/tv programmes.
Breakfast was a very comprehensive buffet with also a la carte menu all inclusive in the price, they will open the curtains in the restaurant, which also faces Grandvalira, so the views first thing in the morning were always glorious. You can get room services for breakfast but there is a €10 supplement to bring to your room.
The restaurant, situated on the 4 floor, was great. As people mentioned there are two restaurants, one specialising in Asian Fusion and the other in Mediterranean cuisine. We found that the Asian Fusion was better than the Mediterranean in general; although the fish dishes were always great in the Mediterranean restaurant. There is a supplement to some dishes but we are talking about €5 to €10, one will hardly break the bank. Some dishes can be quite elaborated but you also have dishes such as fried eggs and chips if you are in the mood for “simpler” food. As we went the week of 19th March, the hotel was only half capacity so we did not experience problems with getting a table like other travellers. The head waiter (hairless chap with distinctive sideburns) and the rest of the restaurant staff in general were really fantastic .……I cannot praise them enough, every evening we were treated like Royalty and towards the end of the week they would engage in conversation with the regulars, again the restaurants were a very low capacity so we have not experience a full restaurant service.
The Wellness Spa is a must, with 5 floors of poor bliss, the pool was my best friend for all those pain and aches after a whole day in ski school, but must be booked every time; we booked every evening when we were leaving for the following day and do not forget to bring those flip flops, €25 per person is a bit steep.
Our coach was picking up us at 5:00 in the morning on Sunday and the hotel organises a very small, but nice, breakfast buffet for all those clients leaving so early (other guess were not even aware of this); it is mainly pastries, yogurts, fresh fruit and freshly squeeze orange juice together with fresh tea and coffee but it felt great that they have this very thoughtful gesture with their departing guess. The buffet starts from 3:45 until 6:30 and only on Sunday mornings.
The hotel has lockers beside the entrance to the gondola, which is great as you don’t have to carry the skies/boots back and forth every day. The locker is supervised by staff of the Calbo group.
…..and the snow was just superb in the resort! Seemingly it was the only week that had snow for the entire year, so we count ourselves very luck. I cannot recommend this hotel enough; it is luxurious without being pretentious, comfortable, stylish and very cosy. We did not want to leave and we are very much looking forward to next year coming back to Soldeu, the ski school (Vivienne is the best instructor ever!) and the Hermitage Hotel.
