We spent three nights at hotel wachauerhof in Melk, in August 2011 and were quite pleased with the hotel, even if there were a few drawbacks.
The hotel looks nice, the rooms are modern and very spacious, comfortable, clean. However, the lack of a refrigerator (or the possibility of hiring one) in a three star hotel of 90 E/night was upsetting, especially as we were travelling in August with a two year old. But we managed to get by due to the Spar market nearby. Also upsetting was the lack of internet connection in the hotel. Not really acceptable in 2011.
The restaurant was ok, we had lunch there once and the food was tasty, but the breakfast buffet was terrible, poor choice, poor quality, poor presentation. A big minus for that.
Melk is a great little town definetely worth seeing, we recommend a stroll along the Danube banks. We had dinner one evening in a restaurant by the riverside and was quite pleasant.
The place is renowed for its bicycle routes, so if you're into cycling, that is the place to go.
A thing that was not to our liking was that everything was closed by seven o'clock, even restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops and in summertime this is unimaginable.
All in all, we liked our short stay in Melk, we liked the visit to the stift and the surroundings.
