I booked for myself and family based on rave reviews from others on this site. My emails confirming reservations ahead of the trip and requesting adjoining rooms were replied to promptly and pleasantly and advice given re getting to the hotel by bus no 2 from the airport etc. The stop was Paris Lodron Strasse - opposite the hotel - but the actual bus stop is not called that so if you do the same check with the bus driver and make sure he tells you when you get to the right stop!
Check in was smooth and we were given nice adjoining rooms. It wasn't until the night that I realised they were a) on first floor right next to the restaurant (not a problem itself as it's only a breakfast room really) but crucially it was at the top opposite the first flight of marble stairs. So - stair noise from other guests plus very noisy traffic all night and occasional shouts and hollers from folk made for a relatively sleepless night - not what you want when you have paid £70 a night really to sleep. I enquired about a change of rooms but was told it would incur a charge - so we stayed put and I used ear plugs and herbal relaxing tablets......so sleep was then good.
Breakfast was excellent and we got in to the habit of making cheese and ham rolls for lunch and saving them in a bag too!
We bought Salzburg cards (about £25 each for 3 days - but had to get them from tourist info in Mozart Platz as hotel didn't have any 3 day ones) and went free of charge then to:
The Schloss up the funicular railway
The Toy Museum
Mozart's birthplace museum
Mozart's Residence museum
The Natural History Museum
Up a mountain by cable car via the no 25 bus from round the corner from the hotel
The Zoo via the no 25 bus again
Hellbrun Palace via the no 25 bus again
The Museum of Modern Art up in the lift
The Salzburg Museum (this was fantastic!)
We paid extra to go on a horse and carriage ride too - cos when in Salzburg that's what you do! And we paid for hot chocolate with rum in Cafe Tomaselli (Mozart used to go there - trad cafe with cakes to die for).
Second trip to Salzburg - place itself as magical and great as ever - but I think on reflection that the hotel Marcus Sitticus I stayed in last year was cheaper, far quieter, smaller but good enough for the peace and quiet factor!
