“Austrotel ok but noisy, Salzburg great as ever”

Austrotel Salzburg

I booked for myself and family based on rave reviews from others on this site. My emails confirming reservations ahead of the trip and requesting adjoining rooms were replied to promptly and pleasantly and advice given re getting to the hotel by bus no 2 from the airport etc. The stop was Paris Lodron Strasse - opposite the hotel - but the actual bus stop is not called that so if you do the same check with the bus driver and make sure he tells you when you get to the right stop!

Check in was smooth and we were given nice adjoining rooms. It wasn't until the night that I realised they were a) on first floor right next to the restaurant (not a problem itself as it's only a breakfast room really) but crucially it was at the top opposite the first flight of marble stairs. So - stair noise from other guests plus very noisy traffic all night and occasional shouts and hollers from folk made for a relatively sleepless night - not what you want when you have paid £70 a night really to sleep. I enquired about a change of rooms but was told it would incur a charge - so we stayed put and I used ear plugs and herbal relaxing tablets......so sleep was then good.

Breakfast was excellent and we got in to the habit of making cheese and ham rolls for lunch and saving them in a bag too!

We bought Salzburg cards (about £25 each for 3 days - but had to get them from tourist info in Mozart Platz as hotel didn't have any 3 day ones) and went free of charge then to:

The Schloss up the funicular railway
The Toy Museum
Mozart's birthplace museum
Mozart's Residence museum
The Natural History Museum
Up a mountain by cable car via the no 25 bus from round the corner from the hotel
The Zoo via the no 25 bus again
Hellbrun Palace via the no 25 bus again
The Museum of Modern Art up in the lift
The Salzburg Museum (this was fantastic!)

We paid extra to go on a horse and carriage ride too - cos when in Salzburg that's what you do! And we paid for hot chocolate with rum in Cafe Tomaselli (Mozart used to go there - trad cafe with cakes to die for).

Second trip to Salzburg - place itself as magical and great as ever - but I think on reflection that the hotel Marcus Sitticus I stayed in last year was cheaper, far quieter, smaller but good enough for the peace and quiet factor!

We went to Salzburg in September. The AustroHotel was a great choice. Excellent location just by the Mirabell Gardens and main bus stops. We arrived late at night and were received by a lovely and friendly young receptionist who offered us drinks from their little lounge by reception and then informed us that we had been upgraded to a business room because that would be more quiet and we could rest better! great service in general. nice big room, furniture probably a bit old fashion but no complaints. Breakfast was good. More continental which is fine with me. Champagne available during the weekend.

Salzburg is just a magnificent city. I would go there again no doubt. You can easily walk everywhere. We crossed the river and walk up to the local brewery and from there walked all the way to the fortress. The view is just amazing and it's so lovely and quiet, really worth doing.

Day excursions, Eagle's nest is a must. Hellbrun castle, you can just take the bus and it's a nice and funny experience, specially when touring the gardens of the castle but i will not reveal any more so i don't ruin your experience.

Sound of Music tour, we didn't do it but we don't think it's worth it. You can't go into the house, so the tour takes you to the outside and from the otherside of the lake they tell you about the house, the actors etc, save your money, do your research at home, walk to the house by the lake, take lovely pics and go for a meal to the italian restaurant opposite and enjoy the lovely view!!

Amazing city, great little pubs, really lovely and friendly people. I would definitely go again!

“Small gem in a great location”

Austrotel Salzburg

We chose the Austrotel based on TripAdvisor reviews. Thanks to my fellow reviewers for pointing us yet again to a good choice! This was just an overnight stay for a side trip from Munich so we wanted something quiet, comfortable and convenient, and this fit the bill. The hotel is in the newer section of the city but it’s an easy walk from the train station and also an easy walk to the old section of Salzburg. It’s on the edge of Mirabell Gardens, one of the scenes of “Doe, a Deer” in the movie “The Sound of Music”.

A nice touch is the downstairs lounge, which has complimentary coffee and bottled water available any time you want it. Our initial room (214) was small but comfortable, and though it was on the second floor the street noises were effectively shut out once we closed the windows. Or so I thought. My husband thought differently and, after we were settled in and he couldn’t get used to the noise and lights from the streets, went downstairs and asked for a different room. They gave him the key to Room 405 and we de-camped to a room 2 floors up and away from the main street. We have pictures from both rooms. Keep in mind that Room 405, while much larger and quieter, had only a shower and no bathtub. No chain-hotel cookie-cutter rooms here!

The buffet breakfast was a typical assortment for a small European hotel and included warming trays of scrambled eggs, sausage and soft-boiled eggs as well as breads baked on the premises and an espresso/cappucchino maker. They even had the local spread, a combination of cheese and butter, to put on your bread. We passed on that. Our cardiologist told us not to eat it.

A few minor issues I’ll note in case any of these is important to you: first, there’s no high-speed Internet access from the rooms. You get dial-up or you can wait to use the one available PC in the lobby (which was occupied every time I walked by). The bathroom amenities do not include shampoo or bars of soap. There’s a nice liquid herbal soap available from dispensers, though. I used it as a shampoo but if you’re pickier you’ll have to bring your own! Finally, although the TV has far more channels than many hotel systems, we could find only one channel in English- CNN.

We were very happy with the Austrotel- our rate of 89 Euros was easy on our weakened-dollar travel budget and it did all the basics very well.

Plus side - hotel had a sense of spaciousness with high ceilings . My room overlooked the street, so I had the benefit of a french door style window, the downside of this being pretty bad traffic noise. As mentioned before the area outside the hotel is a hub for city buses ( potentially good - airport bus stops directly outside the hotel) but this means more or less constant traffic noise between about 6am and midnight.
Other than this no complaint about quite a pleasant room with a very decent bathroom. Breakfast average to good and very helpful and cheerful reception staff.
A clear bonus is the seating area on the ground floor with complimentary hot and cold drinks and one internet point which is also free.
Found the hotel a little pricey for what it provided, but it was high season.

I stayed here for 4 nights in July07. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING HOTEL...right in the middle of it all....the bus stops in front of the hotel...and you don't exacly need the bus to go to the major attractions in the city because you can have the leisurely walk!! The breakfast was great...room was good, average size (and I wasn't looking for a luzury hotel anyway, i was more interested to see things around a find a safe place to sleep). No air/cond, but it didn't bother me..bathroom was nice, enough space to keep your stuff...make sure you ask for a room not facing the st,.Reception staff are v friendly, speak english well.. Very safe area...well salzburg is a safe city anyway....Post office 3 min walk away...mozart's house 5 mins walk away...and you can walk to the danube bridge in 10mins...it's definitely a hot spot hotel and i won't hesitate to stay here again. Highly recommend/
