“Loved the old town”

Austrotel Salzburg

Fantastic hotel, very close to old city of Salzburg. Rooms cleaned daily with clean towels but shame no coffee/tea making facilities in the room. Free tea and coffee in the reception area but would have preferred in the room. Breakfast lovely but could do with a bit more variety and same thing offered each day and got a bit much after 7 days.

Book the snow shuttle up to the ski resorts, even if you don't ski as can still go up on the cable cars and do a lovely winter walk.

Booked on the basis of Trip Advisors reviews.

The Hotel has a lot going for it, Bus No 2 from Airport 1 Euro 80 cents single drops you opposite see previous reviews.

On arrival excellent first impression, some of the best staff I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, free tea, coffee, juice in lounge plus lovey biscuits, very clean accomodation, first class breakfast room, bedroom OK, clean but pretty basic, left unlocked after cleaning though.

Problem is noise - the Hotel is located just off the main road and coaches park up disgorging their loads more or less outside; from 4.30pm to 7.30pm the noise was incessant, vehicles, people etc etc. The night was mild so we had the window open as well, after that it calmed down but if you area light sleeper or want peace, take your ear plugs and ask not to be in one of the rooms that fronts the road.

Salzburg was great and I would recommend this hotel with the above caveat.

The location of the hotel is perfect - with great food nearby and the Salzburg old city just a stroll away. The Mirabell gardens are just 1 minute away. Perfect location to stroll around. The staff was very helpful, helping us with direction and restaurant recommendations. Rooms were cleaned daily. There are buses direct to/from the airport, and outside the city. We went to the Untersberg ski resort, which is very pleasant.

Stayed here for the first week of the Christmas Markets and had a wonderful time. The hotel is very convenient for the city centre, the service buses run from the front of the hotel and it is about 8 mins walk to the station (or catch a bus outside!)

We loved the hotel, though previous comments about the noise are accurate as it stands on the corner of two main roads. However we took our ear plugs, kept the window closed when we were in bed (we had a big room) and had no problems; don't think I'd like to stay there in summer though as you'd need the window open at night

The staff were brilliant; friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable, we didn't really need the tourist info. and found them quite unhelpful at times as they were only willing to give info about the city and not about visiting any of the local surrounding areas.

Tip; use the local buses to get around as they are very cheap and reliable. One bus goes to St Gilgen, and Strobl and you can change at Strobl for St Wolfgang. All three are beautiful lakeside villages beside Wolfgangsee. A through return trip (missing out St Gilgen) for two cost only 31 euros. and is a very pretty trip. You can also use the buses for Mondsee, Mattersee and Berchesgarten, and no doubt other places too.

“Austrotel ok but noisy, Salzburg great as ever”

Austrotel Salzburg

I booked for myself and family based on rave reviews from others on this site. My emails confirming reservations ahead of the trip and requesting adjoining rooms were replied to promptly and pleasantly and advice given re getting to the hotel by bus no 2 from the airport etc. The stop was Paris Lodron Strasse - opposite the hotel - but the actual bus stop is not called that so if you do the same check with the bus driver and make sure he tells you when you get to the right stop!

Check in was smooth and we were given nice adjoining rooms. It wasn't until the night that I realised they were a) on first floor right next to the restaurant (not a problem itself as it's only a breakfast room really) but crucially it was at the top opposite the first flight of marble stairs. So - stair noise from other guests plus very noisy traffic all night and occasional shouts and hollers from folk made for a relatively sleepless night - not what you want when you have paid £70 a night really to sleep. I enquired about a change of rooms but was told it would incur a charge - so we stayed put and I used ear plugs and herbal relaxing tablets......so sleep was then good.

Breakfast was excellent and we got in to the habit of making cheese and ham rolls for lunch and saving them in a bag too!

We bought Salzburg cards (about £25 each for 3 days - but had to get them from tourist info in Mozart Platz as hotel didn't have any 3 day ones) and went free of charge then to:

The Schloss up the funicular railway
The Toy Museum
Mozart's birthplace museum
Mozart's Residence museum
The Natural History Museum
Up a mountain by cable car via the no 25 bus from round the corner from the hotel
The Zoo via the no 25 bus again
Hellbrun Palace via the no 25 bus again
The Museum of Modern Art up in the lift
The Salzburg Museum (this was fantastic!)

We paid extra to go on a horse and carriage ride too - cos when in Salzburg that's what you do! And we paid for hot chocolate with rum in Cafe Tomaselli (Mozart used to go there - trad cafe with cakes to die for).

Second trip to Salzburg - place itself as magical and great as ever - but I think on reflection that the hotel Marcus Sitticus I stayed in last year was cheaper, far quieter, smaller but good enough for the peace and quiet factor!
