We stayed at the Gersberg Alm for 3 nights over Christmas 2006 and the experience was totally perfect!! They had a Christmas package that included dinners which were very gourmet and some of the best we had on our trip to Salzburg/Munich. Breakfast was equally wonderful. The staff could not have been more accomodating and helpful, gave us ideas of what to do, such as taking a hike on a sunny Christmas Eve day to another inn, the Zistelalm, where we sat outside overlooking Salzburg, drinking in not only great beer but also the Alps (the fog in the valley made it quite magical!) This is what Salzburgers did that day -- not one American accent was heard. They arranged for concert tickets at the fortress, had a Christmas Eve program of stories/carols and just made it seem not at all like we were away from home. It might helped that we splurged on the "Nockstein" Apt. which was 2 bedroom/ 2 bath with a living room and kitchen. This was a 40+ room historic inn but very well modernized and appointed. It was helpful to have a car but it would be a good destination in and of itself. It really is only a 5 or so minute drive down the mountain into town. Can't believe it is not reviewed more -- many of the guests were either German or Austrian with a good sprinkling of Brits -- no young children at that time, I noticed. We would love to go back in the summer.

I stayed here with my family for Christmas in 2004 and it could not have been better. The hotel is truly picturesque and set in a wonderful location with spectacular views of Salzburg. The rooms are huge, warm and comfortable and are very clean. The bathrooms are marble with heated flooring! The restaurant is truly lovely - cozy and quaint - serving fantastic food and wine. The waiter who served us is really friendly and helpful. All the staff are friendly and informative. Would not want to stay anywhere else if I ever went to Salzburg again.

Spouse and I stayed here in October 2004, booked on the phone as we headed into Salzburg. No cover charges, rooms were immaculate and huge! Bathrooms were marble, first class. Restaurant was the best we tried in Austria, liked this place so much we stayed extra nights. Our waiter Frank helped navigate the menu and wine list, plus gave us great advice on what was worth seeing and what wasn't--an insider's view. Lovely premises, lovely view, glad we weren't staying right in the city--which was a mere 5 minute drive. We had a car and did not have a lot of trouble finding parking. We planned on staying in Salzburg only one day but had such a good overall experience that we stayed for 3 days total.

The Gersberg Alm is located above Salzburg in a very quiet, rural area. A car is a must for staying here. The hotel looks like your typical old Austrian style chalet. The rooms(one for us and one for our children) however, were a kind of wierd modern, but very large for European standards. (We had upgraded rooms.) The bathrooms were very nice, with an wonderful, american style shower. But, there was hair in the bathroom, not the kind of thing you want to see when you first enter the room! Dinner in the restaurant was very good, but come on, cover charges at these prices and for guests of the hotel. We were billed cover charges at several establishment in Austria and Italy this year, which we had never encountered before in top hotel and restaurants. All in all, the hotel was very comfortable, but it is not on my must go again list.
