I stayed here for 1 night in June. The hotel and room were spotlessly
clean, but the entire staff could use a lesson in customer relations.
I met 4 different reception people who all met me with unsmiling faces...and acted as if I was a clear and present nuisance in their busy lives.
I arrived at 12:30 and announced my arrival by offering my surname only to be greeted wiht a curt reply of "You cannot have your room until 2pm!." A wave of the hand quickly dismissed me and directed my attention to a packed room of luggage, where I was to leave my belongings. This grumpy attitude was an immediate turn off... especially since this hotel was not cheap!
I returned 2 hours later and was met with another grumpy face, who offered up a key and another stiff arm, directing my attention to the
elevator. Yeesh! A smile would go a long way, folks!
Fortunately -- my room made up for the staff. There was a little vestibule area for luggage, a spotlessly clean (brand new) bathroom with shower, and a large double bed with crisp sheets and a good mattress (had a great sleep here). There was a huge flatscreen tv that hung from the ceiling and the best part was a giant balcony with
table and chairs... with a killer view of the Salzburg Mountains.
The following morning I had to leave early to catch a train -- so I asked the servers in the dining room, who were still setting up for breakfast if I could just grab a quick bun and juice since all the food was already laid out on the buffet. (I didn't even want to sit at the table!! Just eat and run.) Again, more eyerolls and huffy sighs of aggravation, like I was really putting them out (when in fact, I required nothing from them but an OK!) At this point, I was fed up with their crummy attitudes... I had paid for a pricey hotel room and breakfast came with the room so I was going to have the breakfast whether they liked it or not.
All in all, I had a lovely time in Salzburg (the city is one of my favourite in the world) but I think I'd stay at another hotel the next time around. While the accomodations were decent and the balcony
view was tremendous, I really found the staff to be a total turn off.
In my one month travels across Europe I stayed at 16 cities and this was the most unpleasant staff out of all of the hotels I stayed in.
I never thought grumpy staff would make a difference... but it really
does. When you are paying good money, you do not need to be treated as if you are riff raff that just rolled in off the street. I don't expect a "rolling out of the red carpet" but a simple smile and
"thank you" would make a world of difference. My advice... shop around and check other tripadvisor reviews for more welcoming folks.
It makes the whole impression of your stay a lot better when you can wave hello and goodbye to people in your comings and goings.
