We booked this allegedly 3* hotel online, based on the hotel site, which is excellent, and very good reviews on various booking portals (however, not on Trip Advisor at that time).
We spent 2 nights there this September, and were shocked by the rude treatment, not to mention freezing rooms, mold on the window frames, rusty radiators, deteriorated bathroom, burnt-down lamps on the bedrooms sides.
It all began with the elderly "gentleman" behind the reception desk, which we had a very long, unpleasant, and unsuccessful negotiation with. First of all, we were given a cold room on the back of the hotel (room 35 to be more precise). We asked for another (warmer, on the hotel front), and were told that the hotel was full and there was no way that we could get another room. We were also informed that the heat would not be on until Oct 15th and there was nothing that could be done about this either. We were not satisfied with his answer, so he went further and said that low room temperature was anything but his problem and that should we not want the room, he would most definitely get rid of it in an instant. The only thing we could do was to demand a no-charge booking cancellation. This was, of course, a no-no, so we had to either find another hotel , but still be charged 100EUR at Amadeus, or get over the humiliating first contact and spend the night in there. We chose to stay, but the nightmare was not over. Just after we had decided to drop it off and stay there, a couple showed up in the hotel lobby, which had booked a room (for the exact same price we had) and were given, surprise!, another room (yes, on the hotel front). We were obviously outraged. The receptionist smiled and said that we would not have liked that room anyway, since the beds were apart from each other (N.B. : we had no prior acquaintance with him and had mentioned nothing about matrimonial beds and the need to share a big welcoming one!).
The next morning found us in a freezing room, after having pointlessly tried to obtain some kind of heating device (the first did not work, the second, oil-based, was so old and deteriorated that we were afraid to leave it on).
There are severals thing that I need to point out, as well :
- there are two types of room doors (modern + card-based access vs. older-looking + key-based access) - I'm not sure whether that means that there are also two types of rooms in the hotel, however, it raises some questions;
- the windows in our room looked very much like the one in the traveller photos associated with this hotel;
- breakfast-related : toast-bread and blue cheese that were anything but fresh, broken cereal-bowl with bits of glass within (yes!);
- unlike other Salzburg hotels in his league, Amadeus does not provide a parking discount card, which would allow up to 20% saving on the parking fees; if it were only for the saving ... since they don't give you a card, you cannot access the nearby Linzergasse Parking on your arrival, if you happen to get there after 10pm (that was unfortunately our case, but this is another offending reception story, which is serious and I will have it put in an official complaint to the Salzburg tourism authorities).
Other than that, the location was indeed excellent.
This was my fifth time in Austria, and I find this hotel to be a huge exception from what is the rule across this beautiful country.
