“Good location, charming but quirky”

We stayed at the Amadeus in late September. Though some reviews have complained about the temperature in the rooms, it was fine for us. A little chilly at night but nothing awful. The location is lovely; I enjoyed sitting at the window and watching the shoppers below. The church bells do ring frequently, but with the earplugs I brought, this was no problem, and even when I did not use them I found that the bells did not wake me. The room was cheerful yellow, and though some of the items within were a bit old, it was clean, comfortable and rather large. I liked staying at the Amadeus and would not mind staying there again.

Some of the reviewers have mentioned an older man in the front office who was difficult to deal with. We didn't have trouble with him, but his English is definitely not good at all and he is a bit gruff. We did hear other guests having difficulty with him, but they seemed to be very impatient and that was part of the problem. There was a woman who was there at different times of the day whose English was very good, and people seemed to have an easier time with her.

The breakfast buffet was good, which was a nice way to save some money.

Overall, I liked this hotel, and the location is fabulous. I can see that there are some issues that could be a problem (for example, the lack of heat until October 15, or the lack of air conditioning in the summer), but we did not have any trouble and it was a lovely base for our Salzburg visit.

My husband and I just spent two nights at this hotel and loved our experience. We pulled the car in front and asked the sweet older man at the hotel desk about parking. He does not speak much English but he pulled out a map and showed us to the garage two blocks from the hotel. He also gave us a 20% discount card, which we appreciated (another guest complained this was not available but perhaps they have since changed this). Before we went to park the car, we were able to get our room key and put our luggage away promptly.

Room 12 was perfect for us. It's very large! The bathroom looks nothing like the awful pictures that were posted. It was spacious with nice tile, a very clean tub with no mold.

There was an entry area with closets for suitcases, a sitting area with a couch and two chairs, and an alcove for our bed. We slept very well. The blankets were nice and warm. The room was a little cold but we had plenty of warm layers since we chose to come in November.

The outside noise did not bother us; but we are used to city sounds. We loved the charm of hearing church bells. They never awakened us in the night.

Breakfast was in the most pleasant little area that looks like the pictures on their website. The gentleman I spoke of before took very good care to immediately supply us with coffee, continuously check on the food, and refill the orange juice.

The location was perfect. It's in walking distance of all of the history and shopping. One word of advice would be if you decide to do Salzburg in one day, don't make it a Sunday because most shops are closed.

We enjoyed our stay immensely and would definitely stay again if we're in the area.

“Bad experience, deceiving hotel site”

We booked this allegedly 3* hotel online, based on the hotel site, which is excellent, and very good reviews on various booking portals (however, not on Trip Advisor at that time).

We spent 2 nights there this September, and were shocked by the rude treatment, not to mention freezing rooms, mold on the window frames, rusty radiators, deteriorated bathroom, burnt-down lamps on the bedrooms sides.

It all began with the elderly "gentleman" behind the reception desk, which we had a very long, unpleasant, and unsuccessful negotiation with. First of all, we were given a cold room on the back of the hotel (room 35 to be more precise). We asked for another (warmer, on the hotel front), and were told that the hotel was full and there was no way that we could get another room. We were also informed that the heat would not be on until Oct 15th and there was nothing that could be done about this either. We were not satisfied with his answer, so he went further and said that low room temperature was anything but his problem and that should we not want the room, he would most definitely get rid of it in an instant. The only thing we could do was to demand a no-charge booking cancellation. This was, of course, a no-no, so we had to either find another hotel , but still be charged 100EUR at Amadeus, or get over the humiliating first contact and spend the night in there. We chose to stay, but the nightmare was not over. Just after we had decided to drop it off and stay there, a couple showed up in the hotel lobby, which had booked a room (for the exact same price we had) and were given, surprise!, another room (yes, on the hotel front). We were obviously outraged. The receptionist smiled and said that we would not have liked that room anyway, since the beds were apart from each other (N.B. : we had no prior acquaintance with him and had mentioned nothing about matrimonial beds and the need to share a big welcoming one!).
The next morning found us in a freezing room, after having pointlessly tried to obtain some kind of heating device (the first did not work, the second, oil-based, was so old and deteriorated that we were afraid to leave it on).

There are severals thing that I need to point out, as well :
- there are two types of room doors (modern + card-based access vs. older-looking + key-based access) - I'm not sure whether that means that there are also two types of rooms in the hotel, however, it raises some questions;
- the windows in our room looked very much like the one in the traveller photos associated with this hotel;
- breakfast-related : toast-bread and blue cheese that were anything but fresh, broken cereal-bowl with bits of glass within (yes!);
- unlike other Salzburg hotels in his league, Amadeus does not provide a parking discount card, which would allow up to 20% saving on the parking fees; if it were only for the saving ... since they don't give you a card, you cannot access the nearby Linzergasse Parking on your arrival, if you happen to get there after 10pm (that was unfortunately our case, but this is another offending reception story, which is serious and I will have it put in an official complaint to the Salzburg tourism authorities).

Other than that, the location was indeed excellent.

This was my fifth time in Austria, and I find this hotel to be a huge exception from what is the rule across this beautiful country.

We stayed at this hotel back in 1995 - before we could read reviews, but loved the location and the building. My husband had no hesitation in booking again, this time with 2 kids ages 10 & 7. I was worried after reading some rough reviews but overall very happy to have stayed there again. The rooms have been upgraded and improved. Yes, it's loud if you stay in a room which faces the street. This is especially so if the weather is warm and you need some air by opening both sets of windows. If you keep both sets closed it is plenty quiet. The front desk was considerate in giving us a small fan. Our room was very comfortable however with more than enough space for our family. The breakfasts were fantastic. You can not beat the location and price. We highly recommed this hotel.

The hotel is located on a pedestrian street in the heart of Salzburg. Great shopping and dining is very convenient. It felt like a fairly long walk from the train station with our bags, but was probably only 25 minutes or so.

Check-in was efficient. Hotel staff was very friendly. When we checked-out we were allowed to leave our bags in a secure room for the day.

We booked the 'apartment' which is two bedrooms and one bath . . with one of the rooms having a couch as well as a double bed. They were furnished with antique pieces and had a lot of space. The beds were a bit saggy, but not unsleepable. Church bells do ring quite frequently until about 11 pm . . but we found this to be quaint rather than annoying.

It was quite rainy when we were there and the hotel provides umbrellas to borrow which we felt was a nice touch.

Breakfast was a wonderful buffet . . .many choices!

We enjoyed staying here . . . even though it was just for one night and would come back again.
