I have stayed here a number of times as well as in the inner city Hotels (when on tours). I would definitely choose the Doktorwirt above any other for the good value of the accommodation and the Restaurant meals which are to die for, the Zwiebelrostbraten melted in the mouth and as a previous poster said, the breakfast is substantial and a good variety of foods to choose from - breads, cold meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, juice, coffee etc.
The bus stop is close by and the peacefulness of the location appealed to me. I don,t find the distance from the city a problem at all as it is only 10 mins by bus.

I booked this hotel as suprise get away to Salzburg for my boyfriend, and i definetly don't regret it. It was a great hotel, the bedroom was nice and spacious. The hotel is about 15mins bus ride away from the centre, but it wasn't a problem as the bus stop is just 2-5mins walk from hotel, the buses ran on time and came every 10mins. I would recommend buying a Salzburg card, we got one for 48hours and we saved a lot of money! ( public transport is free with the card and many of the sights are too, such as; cable car to Untersburg, the fortress, salzburg zoo, natural history musuem etc..)
The food at the hotel was amazing, a bit pricey but def worth it! the menu was all in German but the waitress and waiter were kind enough to translate everything in english for us!
Thanks Doktorwirt for a great holiday!

“Salzburgs best kept secret”

Just 10 minutes from Salzburg centre by bus. A great location for combining the city sites and culture with beautiful countryside. It beats staying in the city. The hotel is so beautiful, adhering to traditional values. It remains a timeless classic in an ever increasingly contemporary world. No steel, glass and plastic here. Just pure Austria as it used to be with spotless, warm and quiet rooms, big comfortable beds, great food (an amazing breakfast) and a family who run the hotel with efficiency, love and passion over 5 generations. Something that no hotel chain run by "hotel & catering graduates" could ever aspire too. This family have hospitality in their blood and make a great team. If you don't stay here, just go for a meal. If you don't, you'll have missed a real treat. We will be back!

We have just returned from a four night stay at The Hotel Doktorwirt and cannot praise this hotel highly enough. Whether it be for an adults only short city break or a 1-2 week family holiday - winter or summer - this establishment would be hard to beat for quality and price.

For our short stay in Salzburg, we had initially thought it would be more convenient to stay in the city centre - thankfully the hotels we had short listed in the 'Old Town' on recommendation from T.A. were fully booked! Obviously I cannot comment on these personally, but we did see them on our travels around the town and yes, they are very convenient for a city centre stay, however from our own experience I would find it very hard to believe that any of them could match the hospitality, ambience, amenities and quality of food that the Doktorwirt delivers.

This hotel is a traditional Austrian 4* mid size, family run establishment (the restaurant deserves 5* +) set in it's own grounds, 10 minutes by bus or taxi from the city centre with an outside and newly built inside heated pool plus sauna and massage rooms. Understandably the large gardens which overlook the countryside and mountains beyond were not looking their best at this time of year, but with a bit of imagination it is not hard to visualise the picture in spring and summer!

Due to high booking we staying in a standard twin room for the first 3 nights and one of the lovely 'Tower Rooms' for the last night. Standard rooms (some face the front of the property, some face the garden and outdoor pool at the rear) were well furnished with the addition of two comfortable chairs, a table, T.V. and radio. Adequate wardrobe and shelve space. Our bathroom had both bath and hand held shower, hair dryer and was replenished with toiletries daily. The lovely Tower Rooms on the second floor were more spacious and looked out over the rear garden/outside pool and on to the fields and countryside beyond - again - the above furnishings, but also a sofa and additional table. Bathrooms were of a higher quality in these rooms - fully tiled and with shower plus, again, all of the above.

The restaurant at the Doktorwirt really deserves 5* and I cannot praise highly enough the exceptional freshly cooked food that was served from their kitchen. It is to die for. A first class, extensive menu, very well cooked and presented and served up in a lovely dining room by well trained, friendly and helpful staff (the menu had to be translated to us so a special thanks to Kat for the explanations). To complement the food there was a huge spirit/beer/wine list - again all very reasonably priced.

Breakfast, served between 07.00 - 10.30 is taken in a seperate dining room and again the choice is plentiful. A great variety of both hot and cold dishes, fresh bread, jams, cereals, juices, cold meats, cakes, perfect boiled eggs, sausages etc. etc. - the list is endless - plus fresh coffee or tea ( from traditional to fruits or herbal). Allow at least one hour to enjoy!

In addition to this there is a very friendly bar area which, from our own experience, seemed to be used mainly by the resident guests and by the regular diners from the city and surrounding areas, who book repeatedly to enjoy the fantastic dinner menu.

Children are well catered for in both the restaurants and breakfast room - they have of course the use of both the pools and there is a good choice of games/puzzles etc. for an afternoon inside.

The journey in and out of the city centre did not in any way detract from our choice of hotel. Taxis are easily flagged down and buses run to a very tight, frequent schedule with the last bus leaving city centre to hotel at 11.10. As I said before, the journey only takes ten minutes and if you purchase a 'Salzburg Card' this entitles you to free transport, not to mention free entry into most of the major sights around town. We found it to be a huge saving.

Will we return? No prizes for guessing correctly! Unfortunately we missed out on the snow scenes - that would have made our trip perfect for me - so a return journey is a must! From all accounts it looks beautiful in spring too.................................

I know I have said it before, but thank you once again to Carolyn, Elizabeth, Karl and Kat. Keep up the good work and hope to see you all again before too long.

“A wonderfully cosy, typically Austrian hotel”

Hotel Doktorwirt

My friends and I spent a lovely few days at the Doktorwirt at the beginning of December. We loved the location, because we had the feeling we were in the middle of the countryside, away from the hustle and bustle of Salzburg, and yet the bus stop was only a stone's throw away and the buses into Salzburg centre were on average every 7 minutes, and the journey took about 10-15 minutes.
The hotel itself is full of Austrian charm, and very clean and cosy. The staff were always extremely friendly and helpful, in fact we found everything about the hotel to be wonderful and very good value for money - including the restaurant. The one slightly negative thing I would mention, is that there is no lift to the upper floors, which could be a problem for more elderly or unfit guests, but the staff offered to take our bags to our rooms and bring them down when we checked out.

We would have no hesitation in recommending it and would definitely stay there if we ever visited Salzburg again.
