I booked this hotel through the Austrian Air Vacation Department after checking the positive reviews in Tripadvisor, as I always do. Once you pass the entrance, which is very unpretencious, you will find a viennese style, cozy and charming lobby, The front desk crew was friendly and efficient. We arrived at around 10:00AM, and even when check-in was at 1:00 PM, they advised us that our room was ready after only a 10-minute-wait. That was great news after an 8 1/2 hour flight in the cramped, uncomfortable Austrian Air economy class (in-flight service was wonderful, though).
We were assigned the room No. 52, which, to my surprise, was a lot bigger than expected. The bed had a great mattress, it had a nice size closet and a full bath with the toilet in a separated compartment. The room was spotlessly clean and it had a small, older TV which it did not bother us since we did not travel to Vienna to watch television. Yes, there is a big construction going on rigth accross the street and it gets noisy at regular working hours, but it ceased daily in the early evening and did not disturb our night sleep at all. And the windows are dual pane, so the outside noise is minimal if you keep the windows closed. And, in the cold month of March, you need to keep them closed. Heating is provided through the older, traditional european radiator and works very well. And if the room gets too hot, you can lower the temperature by turning the knob. Breakfast was served in a smaller room. I had read some reviewers complaints about the small size of it, but actually we had no problems and never had to wait for a table. Breakfast was very substantial, superb. If you want bacon, eggs and hash browns stay in the U.S. and go o Denny's: that is not included in the European fare. But in the Savoy you will get a wide variety of breads, cold-cuts, sliced and cream cheeses, chile peppers, artichocke hearts, little glazed onions (don't miss them!!!), hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, cereal, fresh fruit, fruit salad and several fruit juices plus 1st quality coffee and tea. The attendants keep a watchfull eye and are constantly and efficiently replenishing the food.
The front-desk crew always provided the city information we requested in a friendly, knowledgable fashion. And they were never wrong when reccomending good restaurants. We particularly liked the Lux, about 3 blocks away, in the upsurging and trendy Spittelberg neighborhood. The place is very inviting, food is superb, prices are reasonable and an English menu is available at your request, as it happens in most of the vienesse restaurants. Service is kind of slow but that does not seem to upset the austrian patrons and did not upset us. After all we were on vacation.
The location of this hotel is unbeatable, only one block away from Maria Hilffe Strasse, a major shopping street with lots of nice stores and restaurants. The subway station, Neubagasse, is also 1 or 2 minutes away (use the underground passage of the NH hotel). The museum quartier is at walking distance as well. You can take the subway to St. Stephen Cathedral, a 4-minute ride. But I reccomend you to walk to Maria Hilffe Strasse, go accross the majestic, impressive Hofburg Palace, walk through the elegant pedestrian area of Kohlmarkt and arrive in Saint Stephen's Cathedral in about 35 minutes. Truly one of the nicest walks in my life. Vienna is a striking beautiful, clean, safe, easy to get around city. For those who feel the pinch of a devaluated dollar but do not want to give up on Europe, and are anxious to find quality and value in the expensive Vienna, search no more. The Savoy Garni is the place for you. And if I go back to Vienna, as I look forward, I will not hesitate to return to this well-
run, affordable, fantastically located hotel.
