We selected this hotel based on TripAdvisor ratings. The location is convenient and our room was clean. Their problem is that they are understaffed and lack knowledgeable front desk staff. Upon our arrival we asked the front desk attendant to recommend a vegetarian restaurant for lunch. It was Sunday. We walked 10 minutes to the restaurant only to find that it was closed on Sundays. We had also her to recommend a cafe or restaurant near the museums & shops - yet she had no suggestions. Since it was Sunday all of the bookshops were closed. There were no brochures or guidebooks about Vienna in our room. Nor did our room have any English language magazines. We had planned to read up about what to see & do in Vienna upon arrival at the hotel - yet the front desk could only offer us a map. We then walked to one of the five star hotels and asked their concierge for suggestions. Fortunately the concierge at the other hotel knew of one bookshop which was open on Sundays. We took the metro to the bookshop and bought several guidebooks about Vienna. We stayed at the Hotel Rathaus for two nights. When cleaning our room the housekeeper failed to replenish the bath soap and body lotion. We had to call the front desk to request toiletries. It is also odd that the hotel does not have a lobby. It only has a front desk on the 2nd floor. They only had one person on duty at the front desk in the morning when folks need to check out. Thus a long line of guests waited to checkout - in the narrow hallway adjacent to the front desk. After check out we waited on the sidewalk for our cab, since there was no lobby area seating - and one can not see the entrance door from the front desk area. In our opinion the hotel staff needs to be more friendly, knowledgeable and service oriented.

Just returned from my visit to Vienna where I had the opportunity to "sample" three hotels. The first one (where I use to stay when visiting Vienna for leisure) was Pension Pertschy - unbeatable location; the second one (Austria Trend Hotel Savoyen) was a huge business hotel but conveniently located when arriving from the airport by S-Bahn and the third one was Rathaus Wein & Design. The hotel is located in the 8th discrict (between Josefstadt and Neubau). This is not exactly next to the Stephansdom but it takes only about 15/20 Minutes to walk...and it is a very nice walk, passing three nice parks (Rathauspark, Volksgarten and Hofgarten). As the hotel has no fitness equipment you can also go jogging in the park. Apart from that the location is quite interesting, not a tourist-only zone. Walking distance to Spittelberg and the Museums Quartier. Rooms are large, clean and provide for all you need (Broadband for free) and the rates are more than ok compared to town average. As the hotel is all about Austrian wine each room is dedicated to one particular winemaker which is also reflected in the content of the minibar. They also have a nice wine bar next to the lobby where you can taste wine (at reasonable prices). The breakfast (EUR 13) is a hit! Not the usuall ready made hotel fare but individual tasty stuff. And the choices are endless. The staff is very courteous. However, I had a little incident with a taxi reservation. They use to work with a particular company (which offers discounted rates to hotel guests) but I wanted to try a different taxi. When ready to go the cab did not show up and I got a little bit stressed. Apparently, there was some kind of misunderstanding but the reception quickly solved the problem. In summery, I was positively surprised and can definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who doesn't mind staying a short walk away from the city centre.

We booked at Rathaus because of the positive reviews on tripadvisor.
For us the most important things are the comfort in the room and breakfast. We are not the kind of people having great expectations when it comes to helpful staff as we prefer to be left alone and find out things ourselves.
However, in addition to the fantastic spacious room, the great rain shower (big enough for 2 people), the very nice breakfast, for the first time ever we felt so at home that it became natural to interact with the staff. It must be said, everybody is extremely friendly and it feels like they’re actually genuine ‘warm’ people. We especially found (I think I was her) Frau Pöll and the girl with the curly hair which was a bit timid when speaking English but definitely contributing to our excellent stay.

Moreover, we chose the Vinter’s package, which was quite an experience and especially appreciated since we got a free bottle of really good red wine in our room.
Even though we mostly favour Italian destinations, we did like Vienna –despite the cold temperatures-as it is a beautiful with magnificent buildings and a very nice cultural background. We also felt very safe, maybe due to the fact that the streets were enormous, there were big parks, and that the city itself was very clean and we did not see that much homeless people (except at the subway Volkstheater where they seemed to eb gathering one night)..but we hardly ever felt inclined to beware for pick pockets.

The only disappointment for us was the food. I know that we, being Belgians are spoiled by the excellent cuisine in our country, but dinnertime was for us never the best time of the day. Also the fact that people smoke everywhere and that non-smoking areas are insufficient :they do exist everywhere but sitting on a so-called non smoking table, while the table right next to you is smoking (and they REALLY SMOKE the whole time), is off-putting. Still I would definitely recommend Vienna, and certainly the Rathaus hotel as the prefect location for a relaxing citytrip.

We stayed at the Rathaus over New Year 2008 and had a fantastic time. The hotel is in a good location - not in the centre of Vienna but only a 5 minute (if that) walk to the nearest underground station which run every couple of minutes. From the hotel, you could be in the centre of Vienna within 10 minutes easily. It is walkable as well (if you don't mind walking).

The best thing about this hotel is the wonderfully helpful staff - Martina, the Director, in particular. We asked them every night to recommend somewhere to eat and each time they booked us a table and gave us directions. Their recommendations were excellent and we enjoyed each restaurant they sent us to. They were also very helpful for booking cabs and asking any other tourist information about Vienna. I think we would have been a bit lost without their expert help.

The rooms are lovely and we asked for a room with a bath before arriving and we given a very unusual bed/bath in one which was great. It is a great hotel in all and we'd highly recommend it.

Also worth noting, Plauchutta restaurant is worth a visit for their famous boiled beef which was extremely delicious, and Kristian's Monestary which was near the hotel - a lovely 4 course set menu for very reasonable money. Sky bar is also a good (but expensive) bar if you want some good cocktails and views of the city.
