“Pot of Gylld”

Thon Hotel Gyldenlove

26 May 2008

First off - DO NOT BE PUT OFF by the fact it's called the Rainbow Gyldenlove hotel. It's not one of 'those' hotels and there are no sachets of lube and condoms in your room!

It's actually a pretty classy affair for a mid-range hotel, the staff being quite friendly and the rooms a sterile and tame affair, clean and surprisingly spacy. There's not any noise at night, from outside or inside - as the rooms are well spaced out.

It is a fair walk from the city centre (20mins), but if you're neither hideously obese or a disabled, then you'll be fine.

Don't eat here - it's way too expensive, but then again so is most of Oslo.

In terms of, how many people can I get in this room? Put it this way...the reception is barely manned at night, and it's very impersonal. They have no idea who you are, or where you're staying so we got 4 into a double room easy and could have had more - there's that much room on the floor.

Overall - definitely reccomended for lads on football trips, as you can counter the cost by jamming everyone into a double room!

“Not a 'boutique' hotel”

Thon Hotel Gyldenlove

9 May 2008

So called 'boutique" hotel, depressingly minimalist in style, no more comfortable than a youth hostel. The minibar was unfathomably complicated to operate, we gave up. Rooms are tiny, bathrooms have a wet shower only and are lethally slippy. The wash basin was in the main sleeping area, surely that went out some years ago. Thon hotels have reputation for modern and economical but just expect cheap and basic. There is no bar or sitting room, internet in rooms advertised but unavailable. Staff distant but efficient. Why come to Oslo and stay in this depressingly anonymous place? Even the complimentary coffee machine in the lobby was not working when we were there. Breakfast OK though. The many flower arrangements were black plastic, a species we decided was pittosporum plastica negroides. This hotel was booked for us by business colleagues who thought it chic. They obviously never stayed.

“Newer and nice”

Thon Hotel Gyldenlove

18 Dec 2007

Positives:

Newer, clean, decent-sized rooms. Easy access to very-convenient tram system, which we used extensively. Free Internet in lobby. Mostly friendly staff spoke decent English and were helpful. Good breakfast including warm items. Nice neighborhood with convenience stores and a more-residential feel. Good-sized shower area.

Negatives:

Shower/toilet area had very odd window to the main room; definitely not for those valuing privacy in the bathroom. Fairly little room for toiletries at the sink area, which was in the main room. No seat at podium for Internet access (on the plus side, it encouraged others to finish quickly). Decor was mostly stark Scan-bland. Too far to walk to most tourist sights. Some mild street noise.

Overall, if you don't mind the shower window thing, this was a fine stay.

“GREAT BUT............”

HOTEL IN A NICE LOCATION, BUT NOT FOR WALKING TO SITES. It is far from main attractions, but this is made up for by tram just outside door which is inexpensive-one of few things in city tht is!
Do not man this to be a negative review-considering prices in Oslo this was a bargain, and two nice 7/11s nearby for snacks, sodas.
When we stayed, tv went out except for one channel and was not fixed in 4 days when we left. Breakfast is poor by U.K. an U.S. sytandards-not much to eat outside of bread and cheese unless you are a veggie-meat had very off taste. Sink in bedroom was strange and inconveniejt and bathroom shower stall had to curtin so all , including toilet paper got wet. Floor is heated and dries gast but before showering place towels over all else. Avoid fromt rooms facing treet-windows are double glaxed but must have been bargain priced as they did no good as noise from trams, trffic, rowdy people till 5 A.M. Saturday nite. Staff, on other hand, was good, but very poor on directions.
Oslo has great people and much to see but EXPENSIVE. Beer at $12 a glass, Coke was $5.25 a can, andy bars $3- you get the picture.
Would recommend a visit here, but ONLY if a package tour to ensure meals that are filling and not needing a second mortgage.

“great place in Oslo”

Thon Hotel Gyldenlove

11 Sep 2007

A very nice hotel, surprised that it's not rated more highly...

There are many good things to say... clean, nice, great location, super staff, etc. It wasn't easy to figure out where this hotel is on the Oslo map (just off the city center), but it was easy to find (#11 tram from Oslo S or #19 - I think - from downtown). It is also within walking distance (5-10 min) of Majorsten, a train station, and Vigeland Park (a big nice park with many Vigeland sculptures). It is on a pretty street, with lots of nice shops for the shoppers out there. There are many convenience stores, bakeries nearby, and a supermarket about 5 minutes away. There are also some nice restaurants near Majorsten.

The staff was very helpful with everything and very accomodating. There is free Internet in the lobby, and what amounts to a vending machine in your room, with very reasonable rates (compared to nearby convenience stores).

The only potential down side: the room wasn't huge, but it was roomy enough and I was quite comfy.

I got this room for 150 / night or so, and I thought it was a great bargain. I LOVED their breakfast. I rarely eat a big breakfast, and I thought about having 3-4 servings!

I would absolutely stay there again.
